Check carefully and see "What" sent the message about you being paid in Local Chat. Bring up your chat log history and look for a payment message. If you find one then it was a joke or ruse chatted to you by someone or something.

Authentic Object to Avatar or Avatar to Avatar Payment messages do not log into the local chat log.

If your website Transaction Log does not show the transaction, then there WAS no transaction.  Most likely, as KarenMichelle suspects, it was a joke object spouting a message in local chat.

However, if some stranger DOES ever send you a large amount of $L, don't go spending it right away.  If it was illegally obtained (for example, by someone using a stolen credit card to buy $L) then LL will remove the money from your account pretty quickly.  They may also fine you and/or ban your account for being an accomplice to money laundering.

If you are worried about that, then do the following.

  • Do NOT return the money.  Just say "wow, thanks very much!!" and go on your way.  But don't spend it, either.
  • File a Support Case with Linden Lab.  Use Account Issue as the issue type.  Explain what happened, and include a copy of the information from your Transaction Log.  Tell them you'd like them to investigate and determine if the money is legal for you to keep.
  • If the money WAS stolen, LL will remove it from your account, but since you were up front about what happened they will probably not penalize you.
  • If the money was NOT stolen, congratulations, you got a free gift.
