According to Linden Lab, SL is:

The pioneering virtual world that millions of people around the world have enjoyed.

Second Life is the leading 3D virtual world. It's a space where you can be whoever you'd like, build and sell whatever you can imagine, and have fun with others from all over the globe while you explore unique virtual environments, listen to live music performances, play games, shop in the world's largest user-generated virtual goods economy, and much more

Does that help??? :matte-motes-sunglasses-3:

All the answers given are correct. I doubt they will answer your question to your satisfaction. I'll try to take things furhter.

In some ways SL is a game of life, just as in real life you can make your second life whatever you want it to be. So, you could go to 'school' and learn how to make clothes in Second Life and run a clothing business and make money. For some people this provides substanial income and is the only source of income they have.

Some people use it for the creation of art and some people sell their real life art in SL (shipping original paintings and sculpturse to RL addresses.

Within SL there are numerous games. Some fit the basic idea of a computer game, how many zombies can you kill? Other games involve more role playing and are far more complex. They range from pure violence and historical re-enactments to fantasy worlds with high sexual tension driving the game play. How would you do in Star Fleet? Could you survive in a post-apocalyptic world?

Other people use SL as a chat room for meeting people and talking, voice or chat. Others use it as a social meeting place.

Many use SL as a way to experiment with aspects of real life in a safe way. How does a person experiment with alternate life styles without risking their current real life reputation and friends? What is it like to be another race? Are blacks treated differently and how so? What is it like to be white and try to discuss politics with other ethnicity's? As a woman how do you hit on a woman or a man on a man? Or as a man trying to pickup a hot chicka? Getting slapped in SL doesn't hurt as much as it does on RL.

The list is endless. People that are curious, have active minds, and free imaginations tend to enjoy SL. Those just wanting to be entertained are better off with Netflix.

Use the Destination Guide (web or in viewer) to find places you find interesting. Just as in RL you will likely find people there that you also find interesting. Explore SL from there.
