Welcome to Second Life Answers, MidniteWitch

I'm unsure what you mean by "island", so am giving you the link to all the sub-categories in the official Second Life Knowledge Base regarding any type of land ownership.

If you want to be more specific, please edit your post by clicking on "options" at the top right hand corner of your original post and adding more.

It is already "set up".  Once you have paid for it, all you have to do it teleport there and start work.  It's all yours to shape and fill with goodies.  There's a lot to learn about land management, so you may want to start reading some articles in the Knowledge Base, like this one >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-Private-Regions/ta-p/700115

As you start experimenting with shaping the land, you may also want to study this very nicely-written piece >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Terraforming

And this one >>> http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Creating_Terrain_Textures

You're going to have fun.  :smileywink:

Not many people have the finances, or the chutzpah, to buy an entire private region on their first day in Second Life.  Do you mean to tell us that you plonked down $1,000 USD for a private region?  If so, first read all of this carefully, just as overall background:  http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Second-Life-Quickstart/ta-p/1087919?lang=en-US

Next, read all of this link, twice:  http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Private-Regions/ta-p/700133

And all of this one, too.  Twice.  http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Managing-Private-Regions/ta-p/700115

If you did NOT buy an entire private region, come back and tell us exactly what you DID do.  Edit your original post to add information by using the Options/Edit link in the upper right corner of the post window.

EDIT:  It occurs to me that maybe you bought an "island", an object in a store or on the Marketplace.  This is NOT LAND.  It's a structure, a 3D object.  In order to "set it up", you first need to buy or rent some land on which to put it.  ("Land" can also mean "land with water on top of it," which is the sort of land that is good for putting artificial islands on.)  How MUCH land you need depends on two things:  The physical size of the island, and its "land impact."  For example, a parcel of land that is 4096 square meters (a square 64 x 64 meters) can handle a maximum land impact of 937.  That size land will generally cost you around $25 USD per month in land rental or "tier" fees.
