badguy Boozehound
Ok all IM at the point where I am desperately searching for a way to make rearview mirrors in our race vehicles. We have water in sl and it makes great reflections and maybe IM bringing this to the wrong place as this is directed at linden labs. Why don't they give us this water texture in our inventory library so we can make rear view mirrors possible. So far we have scripted RPM and speedometers water temps and all gauges working and would love to see these neat things like left and right turning steering wheels and that in a first person view. And it can be done but yet we can't see behind us to know weather or not to drift into that high line so can prepare for the next turn. If anyone has figured out a trick to make the mirror work please post and help. Thank you.
Kwakkelde Kwak
If I'm not mistaken Second Life had those textures in the past. For performance reasons they were scrapped. This is SL, the place where people would build objects covered in mirrors if possible, overloading the most powerful computers in a heartbeat. You could ask around if it's possible to "look over your shoulder" by controlling the camera with a script.
Rolig Loon
Do a deep search in the archives of these forums and their predecessors. You'll find that people have been discussing mirrors in SL since Day One. There are many ways to fake them, but no ways to get true reflections. As Kwak says, Linden Lab did an early trial with functional mirrors and gave them up as a bad deal. There are a few videos of those trials still floating around in the Internet somewhere. Doing it properly in SL's real time environment involves a lot more data than most people's graphics cards (and SL's servers) can handle without killing performance. We're not likely to see true mirrors in SL for a long time.
badguy Boozehound
This is what i was thinking aswell the only reason they would not release this . is cause it could be used as a weapon . which is a shame as us race ppl would love it and not abuse it
badguy Boozehound
Maybe it could be possible to make my own GLSL in the objects folder and make the high shine the info for the water. Could this be possible so instead when high shine is ticked on an object it would give the water reflection rather than i high shine.?

"Mirror mirror who's the fairest of them all..." :matte-motes-big-grin-wink: This is a true mirror reflection - not a fake reflection. The mirror surface is SL water. (I'm sure all oldbies know how this was done.) :matte-motes-wink: Mirrors would be perfectly usable in SL without any ill effects if they were not abused, like coating buildings with mirror textures. Water reflections do not kill the performance, neither would mirrors when used sensibly. But unfortunately in SL we do have griefers who surely would abuse mirror feature. :smileysad:
Shrouded Blackheart
I have seen it done but it involved altering the Second Life water and then rotating things around. Not exactly what you need.
