You don't need L$.  There's no way that you are going to starve or have to sleep in a cardboard box under a bridge.  You'll never be naked unless you choose to be.  AND there are quite literally thousands of free things all over SL, and you can make more any time you want at no cost.

If you want L$, you'll either have to buy them on the Lindex, the way everyone else does, or you'll have to make things or provide a service that other people are willing to pay you for.  Save your lunch money or your coffee money for a couple of days.  You'll be able to buy enough L$ ( at L$1,000/$4.00 US) to have a fine shopping spree for the few things you can't get free.
