Open the "World Map" and select the check box labled "Land Sale." Pan around the map until you find large connected areas of sims - these regions are called the "Mainland." The land that's for sale will be highlighted in yellow. You'll be looking for lots that are 512 square meters in size. You'll need to pay some Lindens to buy land up front but after that the "tier" (maintenance fee) on that plot of land will be included in your Premium fee as long as you stay at 512 square meters or below. There is a lot of land available for L$1 per square meter or less but it's probably not in really beautiful locations - fine for a little skybox though. Land in more desirable locations like waterfront land will cost more up front but won't cost more in tier after that.

There is no such thing as "free land."  If you pay for a Premium account, you get a land fee waiver as part of the purchase price.  That land fee waiver is used to offset the cost of monthly land fees on a 512 sq m parcel of mainland.  You have two choices: (1) you may use your waiver to cover the monthly fees on a parcel of your choice anywhere on the mainland or (2) you may use it to pay the monthly rent for a Linden Home, which comes on its own 512 sq m parcel.  If you choose option #1, you still have to buy the parcel and pay to build your own house.  Your waiver only covers the monthly land fees.  If you choose option #2, you don't have to pay for the land itself, but you don't own it or the home either.  It's Linden Lab land that you are renting.  To read more about those options, see http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Linden-Homes/ta-p/700103 and http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Premium-membership/ta-p/1054477 .

Rolig and Theresa are both correct!

You can get a free Linden Home with your Premium account.  But if you don't want that, you can find land for sale elsewhere on the Mainland.  Use the Map as Theresa suggests, or use Search and the Land and Rentals tab, to find parcels for sale.

You have to buy the land, it's not free...but it does not have to be expensive either.  Much of the available land on the Mainland is for sale for $L1 per square meter or even less.

Once you buy some land, your Premium benefit will become useful.  You don't have to pay monthly tier fees on the first 512 square meters of land you own.  So, if all you buy is a 512 m2 parcel, there will be no further charges.  You can also, if you wish, buy MORE land.  In this case you will pay a monthly fee.  How much depends on how much mainland you own.  See the Buy Land menu/ Land Use Fees link for details.
