0 Charolotte Caxton
You buy it or earn it. http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Buying-and-selling-Linden-dollars/ta-p/700107
0 Rolig Loon
As Charolotte says, it's just like RL. You either earn it in world or you buy it with RL money. It's a lot easier to buy L$, and a much better use of your time unless you really like working and are a creative sort. Creators in SL (builders, scripters, designers, animators, .... ) can earn a respectable amount of money. So can good performers (DJs, dancers, musicians .... ). A few actually earn a lot of money. Most of us, however, earn enough to pay the rent and buy a few things from time to time and that's it. The fact is, you can earn money a lot faster with a RL job selling hamburgers than you can in almost any job in SL. We create because we love to create, not because we're going to get rich at it. So, unless you want to spend your "vacation" time in SL working, just save your lunch money in RL and buy L$ with it.
