What are some places that will let me rez objects?

Yes. Sandboxes are places you can rez stuff.

There are some stores that have rez/unpacking zones

Race tracks may have rez zones for your car.

There could be a rez zone for boats/motorized watercraft/jetskis near the water.

If you have land, you can rez your stuff on your land.

Well if you'd rather not sleep with some ugly land owner, you can go to almost any Linden Road on Mainland and find a Rez Zone.......I've seen people do that.

Usually the start/end zones of Linden Routes have a rez area, also intersections and crossroads.

Public protected waterways may have rezz zones as well. I.e. in Blake Sea and Bingo Strait you find all NE corners to be rezzable. 

Protip: get Triple Peccable's wonderful hud from the marketplace. It's kinda must have for every explorer/vehiclist in SL.

If you have a premium account, there are premium-only sandboxes which are almost always empty or nearly empty. Much nicer all around...and quieter.

Otherwise I would advise you to try sandboxes that are near the bottom of search results. Why? Results are listed according to traffic (how many visitors and for how long they stayed.) Fewer people there, less likely to get griefed while trying to build.
