If you bought a mesh kit, it doesn't have a UV map.  Mesh is imported as a collada (dae) file, from which the mesh object is created in world.  You should be able to simply rez the object.  If you have a TGA file in the kit, it's a texture to apply to your object (assuming that it doesn't have texture already baked onto it).   You only need a UV map if you are making a sculpty.

See http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/Uploading-a-mesh-model/ta-p/974185  for information about uploading a mesh model.

There MIGHT be a UV map in the kit.  If so, it's not intended to be used in Second Life.  Instead, it's a template that you load into Photoshop or GIMP to use as a guide for creating your own custom texture for the mesh object.  Think of it a clothing template for a mesh object, instead of an avatar.

Mesh objects do not use sculpt maps.  Sculpt maps are a way of "faking" an organic, mesh-like object using a displacement mapping technique.
