How much are classified ads? Are they worth it?

I'm an artist (in RL) and I'd like to attempt to make money painting or drawing for people.. I'm not the best artist in the world, but I try.  :P

Maybe they place the pictures in their SL homes, or maybe they just upload them to Facebook.  Maybe it's a portrait of them or their avatars.. maybe it's a drawing of a unicorn on a trampoline.  Doesn't really matter to me.

So I was filling out a classified ad when I realized I don't have enough lindens to publish it.  How much do you need to publish an ad?

Is it worth it to publish an ad these days?  One thing I find extremely disappointing in this game is the fact that it's impossible to find things of worth (to you) because there are so many generic DJ clubs, sex hubs, and ads requesting Djs, Strippers, or Escorts.  Makes it extremely difficult to find things of actual worth.  Will my ad be spammed out of existence because of this?

Best thing to do is research ad prices your competition has payed and pay above, or at their price to make your ad show better or with the competition.

If you have no competition. Then your $L50  ad may show up well on the side bar for searches of your type of content

Paid ads show good on the side bar of searches

 

Takes money to make things work sometimes :)

 

You also get to see how many clicks you get from them and you can determine the value of them from there. Or change your strategy and price and see if it helps

When I was trying to sell some land and it was really slow, I tried an ad. It mostly got me weird responses like "want to buy some Stiletto Moodys cheap?" (reported them for copybotting after some friends checked out their 'store' - they were still in search six months later) or "hey baby." I asked why they IMd and they said they saw my ad. Okay, wonderful.

Some would ask me to come show them the land, I would and they'd hit on me.

I finally sold the land after I removed the ads and dropped the prices.

I don't recommend ads.

Ads are annoying & counterproductive .. i make it a point to NOT buy anything iv had spammed at me as an ad .. this on FB & Yahoo as well .. you may be a fine artist & i might even like to have your artwork .. but i guarantee i wont buy it if you pester me w/ an unsolicited ad .. my attention is precious to me & what ads do is attempt to steal my attention for the sake of selling me something i may or may not want .. even if i may have wanted it i just changed my mind after my attention was diverted against my will by your ad

Ads work.  Anyone who thinks they are counterproductive has no clue AT ALL!

 

1.  Make a product.  Sell it.  Track your sales.

2. Use advertising.  Track your sales again.

If you did it right, your sales increase.

If your sales did not increase, you don't know what you're doing yet.

Whoever pays the most for their classified gets listed higher on the search page results.

How much you pay depends on how much the other people are paying and how high in the list you want to be and what keywords you are targeting.

And in case you are lucky and no one else has classified ads tied to the keywords you want, you can make your ad for as little as L$50.  An example could be "hair".  To be near the top of the list on that search you would have to pay a lot.

I don't buy $L with real money. I don't spend a cent of real money on SL. This is not the same thing as saying that i never spend $L that i acquire inworld somehow. How many times do i have to explain this ?!?

A small classified is probably worth it 'just to be listed'. Bejond that, you will likely get mixed opinions. If you going to do marketing it will have to be on multiple fronts. You could try to sell vouchers on the marketplace (if that is allowed) and do a listing enhancement on some 'art' category landing page perhaps.

Bringing this topic back from the dead!

 

Are classifieds still a thing in SL? I mean, I'm still paying for mine, but are they worth it? Do they still work?

Most sales seem to happen on the Marketplace these days, and while I still maintain my store and sell in-world, I can't tell how many of those are from people coming in to check something out from the Marketplace link or if they found the store thanks to in-world classifieds.
