Can I respond to IM's through my e-mail account if I am offline?

I have been trying to explain to a new person on SL that I can receive my IM's even when I am offline and respond to them immediately through my e-mail account , but he doesn't understand how it works and refuses to believe it's possible to do that. Please can someone explain how it works for him.  Thank you for your help.

ehm.. how it works is not important ( = i don't know) but it works ....

It works because an IM forwarded from SL to your e-mail account is assigned a temporary return address at secondlife.com that expires after 5 days.  When you reply from your e-mail, you are using that address and your message is then handled internally in LL servers as an IM to the original sender.
