  1. I would disclose how many of me there are, but the fungal takeover isn't altruism, so is off-topic. The original post is about trying things that didn't really work and how that was handled, which is a useful thing to discuss. My reply was on that basis, discussing what I'd done and couldn't maintain and what I do that can be maintained.

If you had a project fail, be cautious about taking away the wrong lessons. My observation would be that projects rarely fail because some mean person attacked it... they fail because they got too big, couldn't be managed, exploded, there was drama, and someone got mean because of the stress. So you can't avoid repeating the past by avoiding that one person. You avoid it by setting strict limits on the project scale.

It's noticeable that projects that are a region or less tend to fizzle quietly at the end. It can be a bit sad, but it isn't as dramatic or harmful to people. If people want to build stuff around a project to link in, that's great, but the main project shouldn't take on that land if those people leave.

It's also important for mainland projects to leave people be if they're not in the project. Even if that means you have a fullbright sphere with banlines around it in the middle of your project, because someone has a temple to the goddess of fullbright. There are other options for projects if random ugly neighbours would be a problem.

So I'd boil this down to keep it small, be critical about whether it's working, and acknowledge that it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea. If you'd do anything to keep the project going, this is actually a bad sign, because you'll do things you shouldn't. Sometimes the right choice is to say it'd work much better at half the size. Sometimes it's that it isn't really working.

  2. It's pretty common for people to end up expanding projects beyond what they can really maintain and then have to drop them back down again. In a small example, I used to have more mainland, but finances changed and I ended up dropping down to my basic included tier. I have a little more again now, but not enough for the parks and gardens I used to have (which were used by people, so it wasn't failed in that sense, but it was more than I could afford in the long term).

I've seen it with private estates too. When it's all shiny and new, they get a lot of interest and add more regions. But ultimately, most people don't stay, and the person running it can't afford to pay for that much land. So regions get dropped until it reaches a sustainable size. Mainland at least has the advantage that you can reduce the size is a more granular way.

The general point being it's better to expand slowly and be ready to downsize again if it's not working. Trying to cling on tends to mean things downsize anyway, but with less control and a lot more stress. In your examples, it sounds like you abandoned at a sensible time, even if it could have been earlier. In the other recent example discussed on the forum, it's pretty clear that people tried to hold off on downsizing for too long, which did not end well.

As far as doing stuff for people goes, I might not have any permanent parks and gardens these days, but I do temporary builds at events and my Linden Home is open. I also make things for charity events. Those things are a lot easier to balance, as if I'm not able to do something, I can just not sign up.

  3. Is there any way to force the viewer to load (and keep loaded) everything in radius even if the camera isn't pointing at it? Because that's an issue I had trying to take 360 screenshots before. Sometimes I could get around it by pointing the camera at a problem item or spinning before hitting the button, but in some areas there was no way to get it to work. What would be really nice would be for this to happen automatically when the 360 screenshot window is opened, because nobody actually wants the disappearing behaviour when they're trying to take a picture of what's behind them.

Reflections are going to be a bit sad if you can't get a shot of your living room that doesn't have a wall randomly missing.

Has there been any update on the new 2048 homes, i am looking forward to them coming out and being able to move to one.  hope they come out soon.

The ranch homes (the first 2048 theme) released a few months back. There's a post about it on the thread you were linked to before. However, because it was a few months back, they're full quite a bit of the time and you have to check back and be quick when one comes available. You can check what's available even if you have a house now, as they updated the land page. You can find that here: https://secondlife.com/land/lindenhomes

It's also possible there will be another 2048 theme at some point, which will mean more houses available. But I'd suggest you want to check in on this more than once ever 2-4 months, as it means you'll miss launches. I assume the forum isn't really your bag, so you might be better off joining the inworld group Bellisseria Citizens as there will be notices and a lot of discussion.

  5. On a practical note, in the time since this thread started, the original poster could have snagged a ranch. They're not always available, but they're available pretty often. No theme is as difficult to get as just getting a house in the early days of Bellisseria.

  6. There are general rules about keeping things presentable and not using the home as a sandbox. I doubt that randomly scattering boxes (regardless of what's in the box), or putting hovertext on everything, would fly as actual decorating.

You know the way cats try to rules lawyer everything, so the cats are not really on the table, because they're sitting on paper on the table, which is entirely different because they're not actually touching the table. Don't be cats. That's how we ended up with rules for breedables and seasonal decorations.

  7. As far as pricing goes, people tend to buy land next to me and try to sell it for high prices... only to have to drop them down again. I assume they're hoping that shops will want to move next to other shops (some put being next to a mushroom shop in the land description, so not much of an assumption). It's not a bad thought, but it's not worth the price the land sellers think. There are often similar bits of land that could just be ticketed.

On the redwood forest, I was around that area recently, as The Nature Collective hunt went to one of the nearby locations. Smaller projects with less stress can be the way to go.

  9. I wouldn't assume the code names have any connection to what's being made. None of the hints so far have indicated islands and Patch is saying that was the code name for the tree houses. Sometimes a salad dressing joke is just a salad dressing joke, rather than a literal description. They're probably regretting that one, as I keep having to field people inworld who don't really follow what's happening, but they heard it had something to do with islands. In two years time, they'll be, "Patch, where are the thousand islands you promised?!"

We can see they're working on a theme-sized area plus other things. If there's another new house style addition, I'd guess at one for a different theme. Not houseboats or fantasy, as both of those had new styles. Maybe for chalet or newbrooke. But I wouldn't grumble if we did get swampy hobbit houses.

Community regions going festive is likely as it's happened before. Merrymount is an island, so that gives them more options with the textures. But changing all the ground textures to snow for the housing regions isn't going to happen under the current system, as it can't be done automatically.

  10. I'm ignoring it until it's stable and working for everyone. Otherwise, I'll be making content I can't sell/give away as it can't be used on every region, and that might end up looking wrong after they finish tweaking the system. Then there's the delay before everyone updates their viewers. But after that all happens, I'll figure it out.

  11. The unlimited money makes it impossible, so I'd hope people would realise it was too good to be true. But be careful of future attempts, as some will sound more realistic. The key point is they'll be random links in IM or spamming groups. Doesn't matter what words they attach. You know it's a scam just from that.

  13. The system ran pretty smoothly this year. A few broken buckets, but most of those fixed during restarts. A set target meant I did a lot more of the resident events this year and had the boopies to take along with me, rather than getting the prizes after the season is all done. Getting a decor version of all of them was good for future decorating. A lot more relaxed all around.

Nah, not Plantpets and not a temp rezzer. It's just a plant you water that grows and apparently once it matures, you get a seed. So they don't breed with one another, you can have a single plant and it will still give you a seed provided it's been watered. I don't fully understand the whole system, I just thought it was cute.

Okay, trying again on the plain language. They do complex script stuff (grow) and they produce a resource (a seed). They count under the rules. They don't actually have to breed in the sense of sexual reproduction, as the rule covers anything from systems like that to farming systems to things people haven't come up with yet.

  15. Most items can only be clicked by one person. So once you find one and claim it, the item disappears. I don't know if all the ones mentioned here are still around, but I still stumble across one here and there (and leave it for someone else to find).

  16. I wouldn't be surprised if there's no demo before the next theme releases. Work is pretty far on and they could do with those houses now, rather than delaying for reveals. Though if they did do one, they could clone working regions, rather than needing to build something new.

They could also be having secret mole parties with all the money they got from Abnor's lost wallets.

  17. The way the rules describe them is: "Excessively overt or system resource-intensive interactive systems consisting of in-world scripted objects that communicate with one another to procreate (e.g. breedables) or grow (e.g. farming) to produce other products or consumables"

In plain language, it grows and produces seeds for more plants, so it's one of those. The rule isn't about how they look or what they're supposed to be (plant, animal, fungus, rock, default plywood cube, unknowable cosmic horror, etc). It's about what they do.

PlantPets are temp rez, though I'm not sure about Potted. I've seen enough PlantPets at people's houses to say that I don't think they've really been enforcing it, though I've avoided placing them out regardless. I do place food givers and those are temp rezzers for the most part, which can end up with the temp items on the ground if people refuse the attachments. That's another kettle of fish though. A lot more things do some temp rezzing than people think.

  18. Only blue dots matter because I have to run towards them shouting "Bear!!! And/or trading card!!!" before they can escape. But if scripted agents did turn a different colour on the mini map, I'd think, oh, that's nifty. I do look at bot profiles and immediately I can see they're a bot, so a tag wouldn't matter much. I never look at the number of people logged in. I've never teleported somewhere based on there being many people. I go because it sounds like an interesting place.

Useful? Not often. A lot of the big issues were handled by giving people control over bot visits and ways to detect them.

Help keep new residents? No, they don't care about the maps, they've got a shoe box stuck on their right hand. I'd like to see a more general official help group, like the new Belli help group, as it's been a great way for some of us to answer a few questions without needing to be full-time mentors.

Make people talk to each other again? I'm a mushroom. People won't stop talking to me. They tend to assume that I'm going to be friendly and I'm not looking for sex, both of which are correct assumptions. Which suggests to me that the primary reason that people are shy around strangers is not bots. It's bad experiences with other residents.

Make clubs happening again? Too many clubs are human only, so I don't have any interest. However, I've not had issues at parties in the fantasy community. People talk.

But how do I find these events where people talk, Polenth?! Right now, we have to hope people will see event suggestions here or keep up with the official blog. It'd be nice to have a year summary of the big events where people could easily find it and plan ahead. A lot of those events happen every year.

  19. My understanding is when they say it's not being applied to breedables, they're not saying that shops that sell breedables can run regular gacha games. They're saying that randomness is okay in the context of the breedable system. You know you're buying a purple cat, but other features of the cat might be random. When the breeding happens, there will be randomness in which traits are passed on, because it wouldn't be much of a breeding game if there wasn't.

Skill levels depend on the breedable. KittyCats have a basic genetics system, which does need some skill to understand. I'm a biologist, so it really just came down to analysing the charts for which things were dominant to what. But it's a bigger learning curve when people skipped science. If nothing else, people go away having learnt to draw a Punnett square.

I could do the script, if the lines are on a separate face, or set of faces. I would need someone who's more familiar with Fantasseria (maybe @Polenth Yue?) to nail down the seasonal dates and colors (or textures?).  I bet the Lindens do this by sending a message to Fantasseria's servers when it's time to change the seasons.  Blush, you would probably choose to hard-code the season dates in the shells.

I'm undecided how I'll do colours, though I'll likely make a tintable one so people can sort it that way. This is because it's debatable which colour/shade would be best (and likely different depending on the decor around the house). I've listed the main one first, but there are variations in shades between items and summer has some very different colours. You won't be entirely sure what shades the treehouse will be until you've seen all the seasons. (Non-glowing parts and items also change colour and those colours aren't always the glow colour.)

Spring (March / April / May) - Green

    Summer (June / July / August) - Yellow / Pink / Peach

Autumn (Sept / Oct / Nov) - Orange

Winter (Dec / Jan / Feb) - Light Blue

The exact crossover of the season is technically ending the last day of the last month in the season and starting on the first day of the first month. The time I saw it happen, it was before midnight rather than on the dot. In a similar way, you'll notice not everything switches to night mode at the exact same time and some items can get out of sequence.

Are there any pets that eat, sleep, move around, etc.? I'd love to actually have to take care of my pet!

Breedables are the ones for that, but keep in mind you're limited to two in regular premium homes and four in premium plus homes. The food also costs money for most of the systems.

For pets where you just do animations for looking after them, but they don't need it and can't get sick, the Teegle animesh animals have those things as options. You can get grooming stalls and feeding troughs for the horses. The downside is your land impact will fill up fast with this sort of pet and accessories.

  22. I'm already decorated for this Shroomasoween and have the stuff ready for my winter garden switch, so I'll sort a treehouse for next year. Not sure which I'll pick yet, but I like the included shelves as someone with a lot of knick knacks. I need to make some bracket fungus for that trunk though.
