I've seen quite a few posts of people asking for someone to hang out with and be friends and wonder "does it really work out"?

I added a couple people a long time ago and they either didn't try to keep up the friendship or we were so far apart in interests that we had nothing in common.

Normally I make friends organically in world because then I know we'd get along and have similar interests.

What are your thoughts? Have you ever advertised for friends and became close with someone or formed a lasting friendship from an ad on the forum?

I wouldn't post a "be friends with me" because I know it's not very effective. People post because they haven't made any friends. They're not good at making friends, often because they're not good at starting conversations and keeping them going. They get responses from people who are just the same. So they try to make friends in a private IM conversation where neither of them know what to say. It's not that it can't work, but odds are low.

This is why I try to recommend groups and events. I can't guarantee that someone will make a friend, but at least it'll be fun and they'll meet people. That does require people to give some hint about their interests though.

  2. Around the time I got into owning mainland and making stuff, I liked visiting Keep It Green by Teizus Miles. Whimsical garden stuff, like glowing trees and mushrooms. A few items are still available at Stillman for free, but most of the free stuff was lost as other freebie places closed down.

  3. Deadline day for exhibitors! I also went and did a bit of map spying. A few sections that look like stages in progress. One region that looks like they're making a template for the general exhibit regions. There's an adult area showing what could be a stage or welcome area (it said in the shop and hop applications that the adult area would have a stage). One of those regions is called "SLB Spicy" so all the people complaining that they wanted "something spicy" at the birthday as per the end of year blog post... you've got it!

  4. One thing to remember is that animesh is not a magically different system. Any rigged mesh (like a mesh avatar) can be turned into an animesh as long as you have mod rights. Any animesh with mod rights can have its animation script and animations changed. It wouldn't be that difficult to make something fine into something that breaks the rules.

In the end, there's a limit to how much can be done at the creator end. It's not wrong to sell a mesh with mod rights. Most people aren't going to abuse having the option to mod things. But if they do, report away.

I don't think it should be any thing like torture. I think it should be just combat. And I think they should be able to do that in PG sims. Just not real graphic. So if they want to do a pirate battle, historical battle, or urban combat, then they should.

Just not torture, or anything else very graphic.

Adult content is "sexually explicit, intensely violent, or depicts illicit drug use" according to the rules. A lot of simulated combat is not actually intensely violent. You can play a game of laser tag, have your epic lightsaber duel, or pretend to be a pirate, as long as it doesn't get too graphic and realistic.

The person complaining had basically been breaking the rules all along. A child avatar should not have been on an adult combat region of that nature. It actually wouldn't matter if moderate land did allow that level of violence, as a child avatar shouldn't go near it. The rules about violence haven't changed in this refresh.

  6. There are things that need to change, but most of the things impact people who are child avatars (they have to wear modesty skins), creators (who have to make those skins) and people who run adult regions that previously allowed child avatars (they have to change to moderate or ban child avatars). You are no more likely to have someone file a fake AR for standing in your moderate region next to a child avatar as you were before. Just like before, it'd be clear from the logs that someone was lying (you're wearing clothes, you're inactive, you don't say anything in chat in response).

I would suggest you lock any adult furniture to group or a whitelist, as this has always been a good security feature if you plan to go afk on furniture. But nothing has changed about that. There have always been potential griefing issues with adult furniture.

I'm really not up on my furry avatars, so I don't know . . . I know that anthropomorphic furries have attachments and such, and can be VERY "Adult" indeed -- but how prominent are the genitals on most feral furries?

Do we need to put little baked-in "X"s on all those kitty butts?

(I'm sure your fine as long as you don't wave those spores around too prominently.)

I was imagining realistic kittens having to run around in bikinis, which is just not doing what I think they were thinking it would be doing.

I see Dinkies and Tinies as full grown, so not presenting as under 18.  When I'm a Dinkie, I always consider myself as an adult Dinkie.

Most of the tinies and dinkies I know are also adults. They don't roleplay being children with parents. Some are married.

In my own case, I don't have a baby mushroom avatar, but it's something that would have been possible after I finish the rigged version. This opens up the question of whether a baby mushroom would be expected to wear knickers or would need a censor bar over the gills. And if anyone actually thought of that when saying it was all avatar types.

Personally, I think that if an adult version of a non-human avatar can be naked in general regions without breaking the content rules, a child version shouldn't need a modesty patch. But if they're going for the strict version of this, a new game can be to figure out where we'd put the modesty patch on a baby default plywood cube.

  9. Talking about personal preferences is missing the point. No filter should be on by default, because this is far more likely to confuse people than vice versa. If someone gets too many results, they'll look for ways to cut it down (using the filters). If someone gets none, they'll think nothing is available (leaving the site, because they don't realise the problem is the filters). None of us benefit from customers leaving the site in those circumstances.

  10. When I open the marketplace and search, the filter section defaults to not showing limited quantities. I was looking up some old gacha items and PlantPets and not getting any results.

Once I realised what was going on, I reset the filter, but it defaults back to blocking limited quantities if I start a new session. I've talked to others who are also seeing this. This only started happening recently. Before that, search worked as expected: no filters unless they were selected by the searcher.

This is going to mean customers think stuff isn't available. Most won't realise the filter is now on by default. The system doesn't prompt to check the filters if no search results turn up (only the maturity rating).

  11. Not sure if the Lindens are still reading, but it'd be good to have a worked example of how the modesty layers work. Does it mean a Barbie/Ken style body with a skin with underwear BOMed on? That'd be the most obvious conclusion (and current child avatars are already flat in those areas, that I've seen, so would comply with a new underwear skin). But if they mean something else, they really need to explain that. Make it very clear what creators have to do before the deadline.

I've never had a last name, but I noticed that "Fairelander" is now a temporary option, and it. got me to thinking that I might buy "Mainlander" if it was available.

Mainlander is one of the current options available through the usual route. (Fairelander is being sold at Fantasy Faire, so that one is temporary and isn't on the regular form.)

2K offers a step change in both the detail and optimization creators can use. Fewer textures with better results all round and if used right, faster to render than objects with multiple 1K textures.

It's only optional in the sense that we all have the option not to use mesh bodies.

A lot of textures already don't need to be 1024. 512 is good for most tiling textures and vendors/signs. Smaller works for particles and alphas. The only people who use 2K textures for everything will be the sort of people who'd make a tiny particle a 1024 texture today. For the rest of us, 2K will be for specific uses where a larger texture has a noticeable quality difference.

  14. Make sure you've not set yourself as a scripted agent/bot. If you got one of the new stilt homes, they've been releasing them before the map updates, so landmarks taken early might have issues after the map catches up. Try going to the region directly (type the name into the world map) and make a new landmark.

If none of those apply, and you still can't get there from the world map, see if someone else can get to the region. Once you know if the issue is your account or the region, it'll be easier to get help from support.

  15. The theme didn't change. I was puzzled at first why people were saying this, but I can see on a reread of the roundup how it might confuse people. They were talking about "something spicy" for all of the year for all of Second Life. Not the birthday event. But given how it's worded in the roundup post and then the post discussing how SL20B went, wired got crossed.

They don't usually announce the themes for SLB until a bit into the year (like they did this time). They also aren't going to pick an adult theme when most of the event is general. So nothing really looks different this year.

There are going to be adult regions at the birthday, but they did that last year. Could be they'll discuss the "something spicy" plans at the talks.

I give you a mistake or fail that affect my mood. I tried to play voodoo.  It was not easy at the begining. Then sudenly I got a message desactivated. After a while I realised that I was banned. The moderator said that a owner ban me. I didn't know the reason. He gave me a long list of rules.

In secondlife you don't have a second chance. When you are banned the only solution is change your IP address and create a new avatar. Maybe they will deteted in a cookie somewhere that I did a mistake and they will ban me again.

All that is game destructif for our mood and our selfesteem. You start to learn a new thing then you get banned. The owner never realised how hard it is to be banned. He feel power but it is like killing someone. that game is really hard and violent in that sens. No second chance.

Being banned from a place is not the end. It actually saves you time, because it's clear they never wanted you around anyway. Find another place and go there instead. If you did something that would warrant being banned, learn from it and avoid that.

It is not a game, so don't try to min/max your stats, so to speak. Follow the advice given here. Join groups related to your interests. Visit events. Take it slow when you're in a new space and meeting new people. Remember that lots of people have other stuff going on, so they might need to go afk, spend time building/using graphics programs, and other stuff that isn't always social.

  17. I didn't see the pictures, but anyone who did says the avatars in the pictures look generic. Which means people aren't going to look at them and think it's you. Even if someone did think it was you, that's just an avatar that looks like yours, which is what you'd say.

The root problem seems to be that your ex is involving you in his drama. He went after people, so they're attacking him back. Ask him to stop telling you about it. Block anyone involved who contacts you. Don't comment on the pictures or anything like that (if you can delete any public replies you might have made, do that). It's his problem, so leave it as his problem.

  18. I play it safe with my cannabis PlantPets, but there's no reason to think that means needing adult land. Sex beds are fine on moderate, as long as it's not in public. Sex beds could be boxed up and sold on moderate land, as long as there are no pictures of it in use. So it isn't going to be harsher than that for cannabis. My plants aren't in the public area. I only sell the cannabis seeds at my moderate shop (not the general one). There are no pictures of people using cannabis in any way. It's just plant pictures. That means whether it's counted as adult or not, it doesn't matter, because that follows the rules anyway. (Noting what the rules actually state is that stuff that "depicts illicit drug use" is adult, but it's unclear from that if the plant counts or where it has to be illegal to count.)

The marketplace has different rules. They're often stricter, because it's a public website. If I sold seeds there, I'd label them as adult.

  19. Four years later... but yes, owners of regions make their own rules about what they allow, which are often harsher than the actual rules. Recent events mean adult regions are even more sensitive about it at the moment (in a ban all cute stuff way). Some of this will settle out in time. Some places will keep the harsher rules. Either way, if they ban you, that place isn't one you'd want to be in anyway.

I hope Forumites that plan on having exhibitions, will tell us so we know!

I applied. One of my new stories is about elements, so it was an obvious one to turn into an exhibit. Also means the words are done, so I can focus more time on making the scene.

For those looking at the section about previous builds, what they want is some idea of whether you can build stuff. It's not about having an active Flickr account. I linked to a picture someone else took of a previous creative build. I've never had a Flickr account and that's not been held against me.
