  1. mad men style. boring black suits, boring cocktail dresses, boring hair styles. boring furniture.

But hey lava lamps should do well! And the shapes for females should actually look like a human female!

Yes LL needs to micromanage the commerce team and make all LL's pay dependent upon the commerce team's overall performance. See how fast they get voted off the island.

  2. just make a new alpha layer and check all the boxes. take off everything including all scripts and huds. Wear the 100% invisible alpha layer. You will be good to go by LL's draw weight standards.

    There you go.

Also this is what people should wear at fashion fairs. And the regions will still be croaking under the load of avatars with nothing to render and no scripts to run.

Do we know if a 680 runs SL yet? Someone told me they have a 7970 and are getting a blank screen. I know the 680 does not have "shaders" anymore is that going to be an issue?
    ...

Where did you read the 680 has no shaders? From what I read it has twice the shaders. Now some of the OEM 680 specs show shader clock as N/A but plenty of others list the shader clock frequency.

The rub is GTX680 "shaders" to AMD (and normal shaders) is comparing apples to oranges. This review is interesting: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/2162193/nvidias-gtx680-thrashed-amds-mid-range-radeon-hd-7870-gpu-compute?WT.rss_f=Home&WT.rss_a=Nvidia%27s+GTX680+gets+thrashed+by+AMD%27s+mid-range+Radeon+HD+7870+in+GPU+compute

hmmm does that mean applications will have to be rewritten just to make a 680 go fast?

The main thing is I'll just wait and see what people with new 680's say about how SL runs with them. Then again the 500 series prices should be dropping soon. If the 580 dropped to $300 then hey that would be good.

Also this tidbit is rather important:

*GeForce GTX 680 supports PCI Express 3.0. The Intel X79/SNB-E PCI Express 2.0 platform is only currently supported up to 5GT/s (PCIE 2.0) bus speeds even though some motherboard manufacturers have enabled higher 8GT/s speeds.

So your mobo needs to have PCI Express 3.0 for optimal performance. Otherwise it is like hooking a race horse to a fully loaded bud beer wagon. No 680 for me. Not till I decide to replace the entire system. As a matter of fact I think I will go in full system upgrade direction instead. Why piecemeal when what I have is already too old.

  4. this still works but is on channel 0 (main chat) which is how I wanted it for photo garden pose balls:

    default{    state_entry()    {        llListen(0,"","","");        llSetText("", <1,0,0>, 1.5);    }        on_rez(integer param)    {        llResetScript();        llSetText("", <1,0,0>, 1.5);    }        listen(integer c, string n, key k, string m)    {        if(m=="show") llSetLinkAlpha(LINK_SET, 100.0, ALL_SIDES);        else if (m=="hide") llSetLinkAlpha(LINK_SET, 0.0, ALL_SIDES);        llSetText("", <1,0,0>, 1.5);    }}

Say hide to hide and show to show.

  5. I'm not making any commitments. If Kirsten had not quit making clients then sure it would last. maybe. But whether or not a video card will do well over time depends entirely upon what LL decides to do. When LL added mesh and made other changes it killed my card off. We have no control over what LL does and LL erased the client user group so we have no voice in the matter. LL does what LL wants, regardless of customer requirements, and their customers eat the dog food. End of story.

It all depends on what LL is planning to do. If LL is not planning to do much more then the diff between the 560ti and 580/680 will likely be frame rates. Important if making movies. Not so if just cruising around looking at stuff.

To be clear, If I want shadows and all the bells & whistles then my minimum will be a 560ti. What I have now is unacceptable. If I want to make movies then I need a 580 most likely. $300 vs $500 now and the prices should already have dropped. So I'll just wait a while and see what happens with prices and let others jump in the pool with the 680s (supposedly have twice the shaders etc) and see if they scream.

  6. Well if SL cannot run on the new cards at all and LL has no plans to change their code to work the way the future is going then it makes sense it appears LL is letting SL attrit itself out for closure soon. LL has gone in new directions unrelated to SL. I don't think I will be investing in SL anymore and a lot of others appear to be under the same impression. LL went silent again too. So LL better stand up and state whether or not they will support anything beyond a 580. That will be the signal LL is done with SL.

Let me put it another way. If you were a graphics client developer and your company was not going to advance then why would you remain there while your value erodes away as though you were shuttled to a dead end job for constructive dismissal?

  7. This is how a lowly GT240 worked in July 2010:

Now it can't do shadows at all and struggles. The only thing that changed was LL's code. You buy a 560 now and I lay good odds you will be shelling out again in 2 years because of the decreasing performance of what LL produces. Me? I invested in an antec 650w power supply when i bought that cheap 240 knowing i would have to replace the 240 soon. Now I am going to buy a GTX680 and that should be good until I need to replace the motherboard because of the advances that will surely happen over time.

  8. If you decide to get serious abiut nvidia then 1st consider nothing but a GTX series. The GTS is for entry level gaming. 2nd consider the GTX560ti works great and costs $300 while the superior GTX580 is $500. Then the new and very improved GTX680 is only $30 more than a GTX580 because the stores were supposed to drop the prices on the older stuff but they did not. So the best choice for nvidia is now GTX680 if you can find one. If the extra $230 is an issue then you should get decent performance for a while out of a GTX560ti.

  9. Could buy a 560ti for 300. Or buy a 580 for 500. or buy a 680 for 530. The prices on 580 and below were supposed to drop but nobody is lowering any prices. Newegg is out of stock on all 680s. tigerdirect has 1 for 530. doesn't say out of stock.

I was gonna get a 560ti but with the 680 at the 500 range may as well do that. When my check arrives anyway. Glad I already installed an antec 650w power supply.

The only real way to benchmark SL is to turn everything on full and make a video in a complex region and post it on youtube. gpu benchmarks are notoriously rigged depending on the manufacturer and what is going on competition-wise.

  10. umm ccp diverted a chunk of those resources to work on other ccp projects for a while that were a higher priority. Also keep in mind WoD will have no user generated content. But it will have dynamic cloth using nvidia APEX. So SL hardcore rpg vamps won't like the no UGC part but all the gameplay features may pull them in anyway.

    4. Nobody is going to stop using the Marketplace completely. A shopper finds it much too convenient to locate products via a web browser versus having to hop from parcel to parcel via a teleporting system and then having to walk around the store looking through items to purchase. ...

Some of us made a hud that you wear while on your home parcel (makes sure the script will work anywhere except regions with scripts disabled) and you tp to the store of interest and click the hud button and you get a popup to visit the parcel web page. Open that, find the item you want, and go directly to what you seek. If you look at my profile you can see a link to the store page and have a look. (not posting the link here because it could be construed as advertising) I find ctrl-f in the web browser and enter the product name to be quite efficient.

I'll have to see if it still works. If so I can set it back out in my store. I never charged for it.

As for LL's cut? LL makes more off in world stores. The base tier for all land in SL goes to LL. Renters are not avoiding paying LL tier. It just goes through the owner account to get to LL.

As for saving money on in world operations? Each merchant can determine for themselves if they need a Taj Mahal for a store or a simple low poly low prim low lag operation that is easy to get around in to shop. I scaled back a long time ago. My sales are probably 50/50 mp vs in world so people are shopping in that store. And, since all the disasters that began in March 2010 (with the google search appliance train wreck) that lead to the current state of affairs, I am finally getting back to where I need to be. I don't like having to watch the calendar to see if it is time to close up shop and go back to basic.

Also, I simply stopped worrying about SL. Less stress. Less negative nanny attitude.

    Clear enough?

Clearly that is why, with direct delivery, there is no longer any need to have land at all to sell on SLM. /sarcasm

There had always been random issues with the magic boxes. one massively scripted dragon enters your sim where your magic boxes are and boom might have some failed deliveries. Which is why we place copies in multiple sims. The real advantage of DD is faster processing (when fixed) and less load on the grid in general.
