But it will be a good choice some things… Moderately scaled linksets, vehicles, attachments, etc... will be excellent choices for mesh builds as long as the creator is educated in the proper use of them. In reply to your second part, I think that is what I have done as well and we agree that, “the concepts of 'best practices” needs to be produced, published and made easily available for the education of all that will be creating with meshes. That was exactly the point of my original post. :-) I think they are trying to limit their usefulness on purpose without actually saying that they are. Mesh has the ability to be more useful at everything than prims or sculpties while having the ability to be optimized and less laggy(a basic cube has multiple polys per side when it could have less, as an example); so in otherwords, unless they limit how it can be used, they are faced with it making everything else obsolete. That said, I think they are limiting it far too much while they would be fine having less severe cost penalties.
  2. Yep, I have been wondering what LL plans to do to stop this kind of griefing, because it becomes terribly easy with mesh.
  3. Looks like the sticking point for that meeting was the increase in cost for adding a script to something. Thats the one thing that I would like to see addressed as well. The one question I did not see asked: What is the difference between a server loading a regular prim with a script and the server loading a mesh with a script? I think answering that question would go a long way. Is it possibly because you can not predict the complexity of a given mesh?

While I have only looked a little into mesh for SL, this here is what would make the most sense. Poly counts are not an exact thing, but they are a darned good indicator of how much processing power something will take. Regardless of how complex something may be(save for the most complex of objects perhaps), its shape is still determined by its vertice locations and how they are connected. I was looking forward to seeing mesh come to SL, but they seem like they are going to make sure everyone gets a headache trying to figure things out. I figured that it would mean alot of things could be optimized while still looking good(and thus alot of lag would get reduced), but if they are going to tack on severe penalties for stuff, adoption isnt going to be quite as wide spread as I would have hoped.

The amount of resources in the asteroid belt and on other planets/moons in our solar system far eclipses those on earth so they wouldnt need to mess with our planet at all. In the case of aliens actually deciding to come and exploit our planet, they would likely do as previously said and release a virus or something of that nature; perhaps something like a neutron bomb would also be used. I can picture mining asteroids for metals and probably small amounts of water, but the other planets in our solar system either have very little to offer or the environmental conditions on the surface are too extreme (think of Venus with its extreme atmospheric pressure and insanely hot surface temperatures). Besides, it is pretty hard to keep livestock or grow lettuce in the asteroid belt Very little to offer is completely wrong. Everything in the solar system was made from the same stuff, so the other planets and everything in them will have resources similiar to Earth; elemental and basic natural compounds, excluding biologically formed materials of course. Concentrations would be different, but saying they have little in the way of resources to offer is completely wrong. Mabe you dont realize it, but Jupiter's moon Europa has several times the amount of water that Earth does(several oceans worth, would have to look up the exact amount) and the asteriod Ceres has more fresh water than Earth has. A little water this is not. As for environment, this is what enclosed living areas and atmospheric processors/terrforming is for. I suppose I forgot to mention that the other scenario of aliens colonizing Earth would also only be for a short time in their development and hence unlikely. Wanna bet I could grow stuff in the asteroid belt? Its called hydroponics, or heck, bring/make soil to grow stuff in.
  6. As cool as the alien invasion scenario makes for entertainment, the reality of it happening is very unlikely. In fact if there was any chance at all an alien species would do this, it would be only a small window in the overall development of their culture. This would be due to the fact that perhaps robotics and automation lagged interstellar travel or something along those lines; still very unlikely though. However, if they did want slave labor, they would probably do like what was shown in one of the Outer Limits tv shows and grab a few people unoticed from this planet and then create a breeding population which would be altered to be submissive and obediant. The aliens coming for resources scenario is also an unlikely thing to take place. In reality, aliens would probably be more interested in watching and studying us(and probably already are if you looked at the evidence for such stuff) Given that the universe is almost 14 billion years old and by about 10 billion years, all the elements required for life would have already formed(heavy elements, planets, etc), there are likely to be alien races out there that excede us in technology by several billion years. Interesting question is just what can a million to a billion years of advancement in all areas of technology get you?
  7. Democracy is always removed and authoritarian is always installed because there is always a class of elites upon whom the government can depend to applaud their removal of democracy. Actually thats completely false. The only true democracy in history fell because of a war with Sparta during which a massive plague struck. I take it you probably meant something about republics though.
  8. I think that every Linden should be required to log 30-60 minutes in the SL forums here, each week or two. I would almost go as far as to suggest they be required to make at least one post each week as well. Thats like what, 6-11 minutes out of each of the 5 days a week that you work? Some people take longer bathroom breaks then that. As of right now, it seems like out of the total number of Lindens, only one or two actually take an interest in reading the forums. There are like what, 150 Lindens(a guess off the top of my head). If each of you were to become a presence in the forums, not only would we actually feel heard, we would also likely not have as many inflamatory posts there. With 150 of you, we could count on there always being a couple Lindens on the forum.(unless everyone decided to go on at once, hah)
  9. You must be joking right? Are you sure you have thought of why what you just said sounds...well I dont want this post ARed. So you are telling me that unless they demonstrate they are taking reasonable procautions, you will go on a cruisade against them? Are you also telling me that when underage people go on the internet, SL is the ONLY place they can access adult material from? Are you also telling me that you know whats best for everyone and are willing to impose your opinion on everyone else? Are you also telling me that somehow you will order these filtering companies to comply with what you think, with a program that is NOT even an internet web browser and you do in fact have to download in order to use?(which incidently is about to change somewhat) Are you also telling me that you are a nazi or something of some sort? because imposing your will on other people is is very much like that. First, you do realize that teens can currently lie about their age and access SL right? and that the current precautions that are going to be taken do not change the fact that teens cannot actually do any adult stuff without lieing about their age? I will simply take your point about under 18 being underage in regards to US law and not wanting lawsuits. I am sure you have heard by now that in many places 16 is considered old enough; in my state, the age of consent is actually 16; so the question is, how do you treat this so called age of consent? Second, do you not also realize that many teens do not even use SL to get adult stuff and indeed just go around the internet looking for it; filtering is far from effective here, as it is a fact that many younger people know alot more about computers then older ones do. In fact, it is good enough that many adult websites simply put a disclaimer saying you are over 18 which you have to click in order to access them, yet somehow, they havent been sued yet. LL is actually going further then this by blocking people. Third, as the main SL website does not contain any adult content and any part that does is actually labeled as such and is really the market place, not the main site, it is very doubtful that filtering companies would consider it an adult website. How are these companies going to filter something like SL which is an outside program? At most, they could possibly filter the web version of SL, but then you can just use a viewer to get around it.(yes, I do realize that there are many ways to block access to different things, but typically filters work through web browsers by blocking actual websites or IP addresses, although blocking IP address is far from effective usually) Fourth, you make yourself sound...I will just say I disagree so I dont get ARed. SL is already widely known as a place with perverted stuff in it despite what else there may be. It doesnt matter what "offical" label SL may have, as it is mostly adults that make use of it and therefore, to most of them, it would not make the slightest bit of difference. Obviously, by business, you mean more then just the lone user.(at least I hope) Many of the actual big businesses have already pulled out of SL and there are not many left. Aside from them, there is only educational institutions which use it for research(besides a couple government agencies). Whether an adult rating would hinder any participation here is something that can not be predicted and it will likely depend on price raises rather then any label. Well I enjoyed showing you how absurd your point sounds to me and wrote alot more then I really wanted to. They are taking precautions and obviously this doesnt seem to be enough for you. There is no way to garuntee anything about anyone and trying to do so is futile. It is still up to people to make their own judgements and it is still up to the parents to monitor what their child does. It will be interesting to see if something does happen however as I would like to know what happens with laws between different countires here or if someone could site child neglect and possible accesory to what happened on the parents for not monitoring what their children are doing at home. Ok, I think I will stop writing now as I have wasted too much time here.
  10. Builders can more easily align textures across linked prims using planar mapping: This feature allows builders to align textures across faces so that several prims can look like a single prim. Simply select the faces of a set of linked prims, then open the Textures tab of the Build tool, make sure your Mapping setting is set to “Planar”, then click the checkbox labeled “Align planar faces.” This right here. I dont use viewer 2 yet, but this feature makes me really think about it.
  11. All you people worrying over this should, in polite terms, (this is where I mention shutting holes made of pie) Underage people have been on the grid for years now, why havent you been yelling very loudly about this? Where are the repeated forum threads loudly lamenting this fact? Or mabe even in world protests? Or perhaps you have been sending repeated emails and written letters to LL? There is no way to stop this except for parents to take responsibility for their kids and watch what they do on the internet. As for numbers of teens(16-17) that will be coming to the main grid, what is it? like under 1000 or something? Im sure all 300 of them will overcrowd all the sims causing you to cease all adult activities for fear of being arrested. I have an idea, if you are so inclined to think you will be arrested because of some underaged person's overzealous parents, stay in Zindra, or leave; on a better thought, why havent you left yet given that the underaged have been sneaking onto the grid for a while now? The chances of meeting an underage person now is the same as it will be after the merge. Linden Labs is taking steps to prevent underage people from doing things they shouldnt be and this latest step is a pretty good idea. Now, I dont know the details of course but perhaps they could even take it a step further and put a little variable on an account that says that an account can rez only the sims on a certain list, in other words, if the sim isnt on the list, you cant see it. This would be the final solution to this worry over camming.
  12. I do delete stuff from my mute list every now and then as after a while, its rare I will see the person or object I muted again. Not that I mute too many people anyway.
  13. And now this is about to become a "my word versus yours" match. Anyway, to who ever is the victim, you need to get a lawyer or something of that nature.
  14. If he wasnt actually doing anything then I would have ignored him. Like someone said above he would be like a creepy grey shadow. Really though I think anyone who watched me on here would get bored real quick. Which is another point, you could always leave your account on even when not using it, he wouldnt be able to tell if you were there or not(or he might, but I am sure he cant stay at his computer forever) and surely get bored of watching you stand there doing nothing. Another point is that this person must have a job or must sleep or something, there has to be a time when he isnt on. Imagine if hes like several hours ahead or behind you, he wouldnt be able to stay up that late or get up so early that often.
