  1. Thanks Torley!

I was going to refer a new resident using V2 to the wiki for info on how to take snapshots but then I realized the current page still refers to the 1.x series of viewer.  It would be great to have V2 specific information as well for the noobs. I'm sure it's on your very long to do list and I know residents can update those wiki pages but you're so good at it ... /me laughs and runs away.

One more item about "Display" Names  ---   "Log" Names...

How are the log files named when you chat with someone?  By user or display name, or both?

What is displayed on *every* line of chat that is logged?  user or display name, or both?

See, the problems that people have mentioned go beyond display.

If the username is not used as the name of a log file, it's not good enough.

If the username is not showing up for everything that is logged for what they said, it's not good enough.

If it is too easy for someone to lift quotes from log files that *only* show display names, it's not good enough.

Think beyond display.  Display is transient.  The potential damage done by log files that hang around and give an inaccurate picture of what has transpired is something to be concerned about.

If 2.3 addresses all of these issues, cool.  My hunch is that it doesn't.

And if the Lindens say "oh, just file an AR in case you have a problem with someone abusing your name", I would say to them:

    • you've cut your support staff and your hours -- do you really want to deal with a stream of ARs?
    • shouldn't you be addressing the problem, instead of the symptom?
    • the documentation trail of people's concerns is a mile long on this one - do you really want to end up in legal trouble by not doing the right thing?   There is a very predictable series of events here...

This is how chat is logged when I briefly tested it last evening (Display name: Joshooah Username: joshooah.lovenkraft):

Joshooah (joshooah.lovenkraft): ya i guess they'll roll it out soon enough
Joshooah (joshooah.lovenkraft): ok folks i'm outta here so have fun!
Joshooah (joshooah.lovenkraft): /me waves and poofs

  3. Ya I think version numbering got messed up, hence my confusion with the splash screen stating there was a newer version available.  I can get the wrench icon to now appear but you need to be in an enabled region such as this: ** (Edit wrench icon only appears in the enabled regions such as http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Blake%20Sea%20-%20Kendra/144/124/2)

  4. Are those download links in the blog posting correct? I used the download links and installed version Second Life 2.3.0 (212977) Oct 25 2010 13:28:17 (Second Life Beta Viewer).  However, the splash screen states there is a more current version available 2.3.0 (212997).  Clicking that link brings me back to the download link for 212977 version that I already have installed.  Anyone have the 212997 version link for this beta viewer.  The version I currently have doesn't seem to have display name functionality.  When trying to edit My Profile, there is no wrench icon. ** (Edit wrench icon only appears in the enabled regions such as http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Blake%20Sea%20-%20Kendra/144/124/2)

It's been a long day so I'm not sure if I'm just missing something silly.
