Thank you for bringing up this point. Even though your body skin comprises the vast majority of your avatar's surface area, in my opinion, it is secondary to your HEAD SKIN. To create a seamless look, you really need to get your body skin from the same store you get your head skin from.

If so, though, it's obnoxious because it wasn't marketed that way. It was marketed as "Hey, great new male body with two options in one! Default BOM, get it while it's hot!" So I did, and it IS a nice body (I prefer the "fit" version to the overly-muscled -- in my opinion -- "flex"), but I'm horribly put-off by the clothing being created for it.
Is the Kario body starting to get significant third-party support in terms of clothing and skins?

If you are using the Lelutka Kaya mesh head, then this shape should give you the same results you see in the picture as long as you use the same head skin in the picture.
The "Style Card" will list all the skins, hair and accessories the shape maker used so you can recreate the look in the photo.
The shape is sold with mod rights, so you will be able to adjust the body sliders to better work with your Maitreya body.

So I am just going to echo everything that @Maitimo said.
The Legacy HUD is a pain in the ass to use. There SL veterans who have a hard time with it. When I first got it, I spent an hour looking for the "Activate BOM" button only to have to go watch a tutorial video.
That said... I LOVE the geometry of Legacy body. In my opinion, it is currently the best looking, most realistic and well proportioned Male Mesh Body on SL.
I own and use both the regular male Legacy body and the Athletic. They are currently my favorite bodies.
I picked them up about 2 years ago, when they went on sale for %50 off during a Christmas sale. I also picked up the Legacy Athletic for my secret sex alt. He is usually nude so I don't really have to worry about clothing support. If I am being honest, though, if not for that sale, I would still be using the Belleza Jake body. L$5K is a steep price.
I partially agree with @Marianne Little . Once you get BOM activated, you rarely have to go back to the main "EDIT" HUD. If you want to customize your Materials, however, there is a separate HUD for that. I dread using that one as well.
The Belleza Jake, on the other hand, is still a great looking body and it's HUD is much, much easier to use than that of the Legacy body. At the current price point (%50 percent off sale), its also a much better overall value.
At this point, you need to pick up DEMOs of all the bodies you're interested in and play with them and their HUDs for a few days.

If this is your FIRST time buying a mesh body, I would seriously recommend you consider the Belleza Jake body.
First, at the moment, I believe it is still on sale for %50 off. While normally L$ 3k, you can pick it up for L$ 1,500. The other two top bodies are in the L$ 4k to L$ 5k range.
Second, it has significant third-party support, so you will have no problem finding skins and clothing that fit it.
Third, it is pretty easy to use. You just put on the BOM version and you are pretty much set. In addition, the HUD is also straight forward.
ONE caveat though, it MUST be pared with either a fully BENTO AO or a BENTO Hand Animator that is used together with an older, Non-BENTO AO. This is important to avoid a hand animation glitch that often affect the Jake body.
As others have said, however, ALWAYS try out the DEMOs first; no matter the item. This is, by far, the MOST sound advice you will ever get on Second Life.

I am genuinely surprise to hear this. If I remember correctly, there is a BOM version of the body in the folder. You just pop it on and BOM is already active.

You're not wrong about the system being so complex. The HUD is profoundly un-intuitive . I had to watch a video tutorial to find out how to put the body into BOM mode.
It. was. ridiculous.
It's price point and complicated HUD are the two main reasons I would never recommend it to a new user.
That said... the body looks *****ing great. It's geometry and proportions are currently next to none in my opinion. Both Legacy male and Athletic.

Thanks so much to everyone for your replies thus far! I feel a lot more secure about my recommendation. As it stands, I have identified three primary criteria when recommending a male mesh body to a new user:
1. Price
2. Ease of Use
3. Third-Party Support

That is my thinking as well. Someone who is new to SL and / or Mesh Bodies probably shouldn't invest that heavily at first. I hope that Belleza decides to keep the Jake body at L$ 1,500. At that price point, it really does function as a great introduction to the landscape of mesh bodies for male avatars.

Agreed. To echo @Echelon Alcott The price point is primary reason I recommend it. And I am glad you brought up the point about the hands. Even after the v.3 update, there are still animation issues with the hands. I always stress that the Belleza Jake body HAS to be paired with either a Bento AO or a Bento Hand Animator.

It's a bit harder to choose between Gianni and Jake, both have their pro and contra's. My choice is mostly based on the use of the hud, i like the Jake more and easier.
One of me also has the Geralt .. but never really sticked on me and also gave him Jake after the price change.In my opinion, the history of "The Shops," the store behind the old "The Mesh Project" (TMP) mesh bodies and heads and the new "Legacy" mesh bodies, is often brought up without a lot of nuance. I don't want to get to deep into it, because I think it's beyond the scope of this reply. To be brief, while I whole-heartedly agree with a lot of the criticism that The Shops get, there are important details that often get obscured by strong opinions.
To your second point, "Ease of Use," is so very important; specially for a new user. The new BOM version of the Belleza Jake body is so easy to use, you just throw it on, no need to activate BOM. In addition, the HUD is pretty straight forward as well.

Gianni has a lot of support, but it is a bit limited in how much you can edit it. If you are going for short and cute, Gianni is probably the best choice, I cant give my opinion on Belleza Jake, because I only demoed it for a bit.
I've personally never had any neck issues with the male Legacy bodies.
As for the new Kario body, I am unfamiliar with it. I do want to get the DEMO and see what it can do. At this point in time, however, I would not recommend it to new user because of its current lack of third-party support. But who knows, this may change in the future.

So lately, I often find myself helping other men update to mesh bodies and heads. Some of these people are new to SL and others are old-timers who never took the plunge into mesh. When helping them decide on a mesh body, I often take them to the stores to get DEMOs of the top bodies. (Signature Gianni, Belleza Jake & Legacy)
I try to explain the pros and cons of each body, but often what ends up happening they ask me which one I would get.
Full disclosure:
I hate the geometry of the Signature Gianni body, I own it, but never wear it. I fully acknowledge, however, its popularity and massive third-party support.
I loved Belleza Jake back in the day and just put up with the neck and hand issues.
These days, I am all about the Legacy body and just work around its limitations like I did with Belleza, because it just looks so damn good.
Since the Jake was updated to v.3 and put on sale (L$ 1,500), it's the body I recommend. I tell them, at this point in time, it's the best value: Looks way better than Gianni nude and has comparable third-party support.
What do you guys think? Am I doing right by these folks?

Be sure to take a look at @Skell Dagger's reply. He's really good troubleshooting.
As a side note, I wonder how many times this issue has plagued people. I have lots track of how many times I have had to help friend's with issues that are a result of layers with appliers over a BOM composite texture.

So, for me, the Lilly head is an interesting case. I picked it up for my female alt when it was free during a promotion. I have had issues finding skins that "fit" well. The upper lip-line of Lelutka skins that were NOT specifically made for Lilly did not line up exactly with the upper lip of the mesh model. I tried tweaking the lip ratio, but was never really happy with the result.
I picked up the Catwa Queen when it was free. If I can't get a good look with that head, I will probably just buy one of the new evo-x heads.

My first real encounter with SL fashion was The old "Naughty Designs" skins by Lost Thereian. I remember he had a partner, but her name escapes me. I was like 2007 I want to say.
I remember being wowed by the build of their in-world store. It looked like a real world mall. It generously made use of sculpts, with was the only way to import custom geometry at the time. This was before mesh.
I got one of his Dante and one of his Gabriel skins. Which probably went on to become some of the most copy-bot'ed male skins in SL.
I also remember they got into a feud with Torrid Midmight over her use of GL Intercept to mod one of their skins.
I often wonder what became of the people behind the avatar.

THIS, is the biggest advantage of BOM: avoiding alpha glitches.
Also, now all those extra mesh layers on the bodies can be made into separate optional attachments, lowering overall complexity. OR free it it up for "HD" textures, Like the eyebrows on LeLutka head which look so much better.

I have a question about applying personal textures to the finger & toe nails of the Legacy mesh bodies ?
I made a small tattoo for myself and was able to apply it to my Legacy body using BoM. Is there a way to use BoM to apply textures to the finger & toe nails?
Or do I have to use a HUD based applier to do so? If so, do they offer a dev kit? Or do you have to submit your textures to the Legacy body store and they make the applier for you, like in the old TMP days?

As mentioned by @Marianne Little
Aeros, that same store that sells the really popular male genitals, also sells a system avatar male Drow skin. It is probably the best male drow skin is SL. I have never seen its equal. Being a system skin, however, you would have to use BOM to apply it to mesh bodies and heads.
I have done so and it generally looks great, save for some the fingers and toes; the texture is a bit wonky on those parts. In addition, at L$ 2, 000, it is rather expensive for a system skin. On the plus side, you do get lots of options and there are matching mesh ears you can get at the in-world store.

Por "nuevo avatar", ¿te refieres a una nueva cabeza de malla (mesh)? Podría ser que necesite activar "BOM" para los ojos de malla (mesh) que vienen con el nuevo cabezal de malla (mesh).
Por favor, dame más detalles sobre tu avatar.
