  1. A blend of Linden Home and publicly usable land (With regulations from LL on how it can be used (i.e. No skyboxes, no ban orbs, nothing that is too different from the theme of the estate)) would be extremely interesting to see happen.

  2. I'm curious about how this is going to play out. from the looks of it there might be a urban area in SSP as well. Really looking forward to seeing what it turns into in the coming months.

Where are adult and moderate regions (the word is not sims) joined? As far as I am aware Mainland doesn't allow this.

Private sims. As far as I am aware, there is no policy in effect stating that Adult sims and Moderate sims must be separate from one another be they on a private or linden estate, outside of a decision by Linden Lab when Zindra was originally made and the GMA rating system was adopted. Please elaborate why, regardless of any existing Linden Lab policies, that Zindra should remain isolated from the other continents.

All home positions will be invalidated. All picks will be invalidated. As picks are a part of search ranking, moving a region means that venues and shops will drop in search position, I've worked hard to get myself to the top of search in the terms I desire. I do not wish to lose this position due to my region being force moved.

I've since dropped the idea of moving sims around because of this, but still, a system like I mentioned where a border of a simulator would connect to a non-contiguous simulator on another continent would be preferable. I'd rather not have a metaphysical "portal" per se as it doesn't really bode well with my personal preferences, but that's just me.

Yes. Set home and picks are to a fixed location on the entire grid. If you move a private region, home points and all picks are invalidated. This is a bad thing.

Mental? pfft. I like watching a certain group of regions for green dots just by lazily opening my map without doing anything more.

No, Zindra should never be connected, due to being Adult. But Zindra should have it's missing edges filled in with LInden Land. Openspace quality would do fine for this, the cost to the Lab would be minimal.

This whole point of joining the continents has been discussed a lot on the forums. Great suggestions like hyper-portals remain my favourite as there is minimal impact to rivate regions yet you can stilll warp a vehicle from one continent to another. But in the decade we've asked for it, the Lab have ignored us.

There's no justification for Zindra not being connected. To say it's because it's adult is like saying that Adult sims and moderate sims shouldn't be connected period, and yet they are. The Lindens have embraced the fact that SL is a varied landscape of interests, including adult ones. As someone who at one point was a minor on SL (above the 16+ hard age limit, mind you), I didn't stick around long or was even very active because I was locked down to G-rated sims, and given G-rated simulators take up the minority of all simulators on the grid - to the point that mainland travel is impossible to partake in if you're restricted to them - Suffice it to say, there's not a valid cause to keep Zindra isolated, unless i'm missing something here.

Also, there is nothing to lose from private sim owners having their estates relocated if it did come to that. Simulators are demarcated by Region name, and thereby, a simulator, not some arbitrary location on the map. If you're not connected to the mainland, then there's no issue. If you're part of a multi-owner estate, then yes, there'd have to be some planning, but all in all, you're isolated from the rest of the grid outside of teleporting. And as Callum mentioned (And I failed to look at at the time) - The worst that you'd have to do is reset picks and your home location, which if you can get the simulator name (as sim names are unique), isn't that hard.

Either way, I'm for either going with Zindra being brought into the fold closer to the other continents and all continents being connected by water channels vis-a-vis  the Sansara-Heterocera channel, or what was mentioned below, given it actually works out.

I've never seen these hyper-portals in action. As far as I know objects that a avatar is a child to (sitting on) can't be teleported to another region.

In a meeting Simon Linden said that it would be possible to have a region treat another one as a neighbor although they aren't next to another one on the map. (It would even be possible to set up a continuous loop.)

Instead of a long chain of regions it should be possible to create these "channels" with just enough water regions to get a boat or airplane to a point where the world was all water and sky. You could leave one continent, enter the channel and then arrive at the other continent without needing them to appear to connect on the map.

I need to improve my research skills. That or do more research before posting. Either way, This could be an interesting workaround, but given the grid is considered a massive space, camera repositioning might be a interesting endeavor in some situations (Think, a camera going around 1/8ths the speed of light or something, zooming by isolated simulators in the blink of an eye - Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's just someone crossing the Void again.

  5. As someone who is both an explorer and believes that travelling SL via conventional means rather than teleportation is superior (because hey, there's a lot out there to see and I for one would rather spend 20 minutes before going to a party at a friends house flying or driving there than teleporting if I had the time to do so) - Would it be possible to connect the continents together by way of moving the continents closer together? I understand there's a lot of private simulators in the void, but there'll still be space for them to be moved elsewhere.

OP's is an argument with which I am very familiar...one I have been making for eight years, to be exact.

Seems pretty indisputable that if LL had simply listened to me then, SL wouldn't be in the trough it is now.

The landowner/creator mafia groups will, one day, have to take responsibility for their actions. As will the racists and rape culture advocates who have warped SL into an unrecognisable MMORPG of sadness and depravity...

Should've listened when you had the chance?? Or was your precious mesh worth this ruin...

That moment when I see someone who I can't tell is on one or the other side of the nutjobs in the western world.

    >Seems pretty indisputable that if LL had simply listen to me then
Oh yes, Nostradamus, please elaborate further.

    >The landowner/creator mafia groups
Although I've heard rumors about Maitreya's inner workings over the years, I don't think that these "mafias" are as big a problem as you make them out to be. Sure, Land Barons are an issue, but they're an inevitable evil.

    >As will the racists and rape culture advocates
Define racist, because in this day and age that comes down to if you do something that offends someone. SL is run by the lindens as a minarchy because they shouldn't be the arbiter of what is right and wrong, as long as it doesn't bring damage to the platform at large or violates the TOS. If your argument on this front is that SL should be a safe space, then you should go ahead and follow Selly out the door. The reason SL still thrives, even with your arguments based on conjecture (Look at the latest concurrency numbers) is because of the freedom to create is not inhibited or hindered by Linden Lab. If we were to follow your school of thought, these recently stabilized concurrency rates would be continuing on an inevitable decent.

Anyone who comes into the argument about SL's prior decline (emphasis on prior, as again, we've more or less reached a stable user concurrency around 40,000 users), and argues from a position of moral authority should not, for an iota of a second, be taken seriously.

As for "rape culture advocates", I'm not going to get into that basket of politics because I'm already probably going to get the lindens waggling fingers for me even responding in such a way, but all I will say is that the above paragraph regarding moral authority fits this argument as well.

As for Selly, at least she has somewhat of a valid argument. Yes, it's harder nowadays to get started in SL with little money, I know the feeling. When I started out, my cash was tight, and i was at least lucky to have others willing to gift me things or give me some money. I actually at one point relied on money I spent on SL premium to pay my in world rent. But sadly such is inevitable reality of both Terra Mater and Secundo Vitae. Money sadly makes the world go round and in this day and age, charitable actions are hard to come by in situations like this. It's a shame, but a inevitable reality as much as me, Selly and many others wish for it to be different.

  7. I personally don't find the *iusta de causa in implementing a limited list, as well as charging a exorbitant amount for a custom name. I also don't get why it should be premium exclusive, and even then, why tiers of premium should even be a thing.

    My guess...

The reason given in the past was to ensure no "bad" names snuck in. Masked swear words in other languages, clever word play that was X rated.

We know our UUID is fixed and based on name from previous threads. We know that changing a name is rather difficult and ends up meaning the change needs to be done in the world, in the marketplace, in the forums, maybe other places.

So what happens if people create a name that is a masked swear?

We know that the original design was butt-faced-stupid that such administrative name changes would have been impossible. There wasn't much solution outside of what we got thanks to the rigidity of choosing the name to generate the UUID and no mapping in the database to allow for administrative changes.

The result was a list of pre-vetted innocuous names that could reduce the problem.

Patch has said he was responsible for the list. It was also said the reason last names were stopped as it was a huge amount of work, finding safe names in all languages took a lot of time.

    Bad design.

I welcome dakota and patch to correct any mistakes there. I doubt they will, they might get the idea the residents are not happy with this plan for double dipping, and also reinforcing the bad design choices, as it stands.

Time for open last names. Use an administrative change to get rid of the rude ones.

This. Add a advanced filter for profanities and open up the last names. I'd rather not have to pay out the derriere to finally change my name to Nodoka Hanamura, rather than this reference that makes no sense to 99% of anyone on the damn grid.

    But it is O.o

It clearly states this in the SL Wiki:

What does "advertises or publicly promotes" mean?

The maturity ratings distinguish between publicly-promoted adult content, required to be on Adult regions, and non-public adult content, such as private homes with a sex bed, that can be located on Moderate land.

Adult activities cannot be advertised or publicly promoted on Moderate land. Such activity must occur privately, behind closed doors on Moderate land (see below), and is forbidden on General land. These restrictions apply regardless of whether the parcel has hidden avatars.

Advertising for SL search using adult words clearly requires being on Adult land. Other examples of advertising or publicly-promoting include renting signs inworld, listing on events, buying ads in newspapers, or distributing flyers or notecards to passersby.

Private invitations to friends are not considered advertising or promoting. Inviting everyone in a small private group that you control is not considered advertising. However, inviting everyone in a public group can be considered a promotional effort.

What does "behind closed doors" mean?

Adult activity on Moderate land must be conducted "behind closed doors," meaning that you must make every reasonable effort to ensure that the parcel is private. This means:

    • Allow only a group or specific individuals access to the parcel. If it is group-access only, the group must not be freely open to join.
    • Hide avatars (turn off avatar visibility) for the parcel.
    • Enclose the area behind walls or other visual barriers.

Thanks for the info - The lindens need to make this more clear - as it'd help peeps know they don't need to buy Zindran land for personal lewding.

    That aside -

You do realise you have to follow all the ways, right? Not just one....

It depends. I mean, if it's a sex bed or couch or anything with sexual animations that isn't visibly sexual (like a kitchen with sex animations) you wouldn't need to hide it behind visual barriers because it's not inherently sexual. Now, if it's a sex machine or something pertaining to bondage, then yeah, a interior room in a house or a basement with no windows to the outside would be compliant with the rule.

Generally these forums are not often like that. The regulars are a pretty friendly bunch.

Zindra is weird, and Life really does seem to have a monopoly on it, because of that monopoly, well, they can set their price and as long as people buy, maintain it.

I guess people who want to run an adult club can choose that, then sell it back at the end for about 75% when the club folds, or buy a full private region.

As far as adult content though, if it's not a sex club - as in your home - then the behind closed doors clause lets you do it anywhere on moderate land.

Thank you for the clarification. Still, the monopoly they have among other things leaves a very bad taste in my mouth, what with being a long time resident of Zindra (I used to rent from Seedy Estates in Moni Targa, they had dirt cheap rent, landlord was a nice guy, he still runs it and given the location and price he probably deserves a medal, what with every other rental location on the continent either charging arm and a leg or being out of the way in a skybox.)

  10. I mean, if the conditions are right, I can see it going for at most 50 USD, but still, I'd rather either go through a private seller who knows the land barons are charging a fortune and will sell for less, or go through Linden Lab and buy abandoned land.

Here's hoping that I can hopefully work something out with the baron and see if we can split the land so I can have the remainder of the 2048 they'd most likely want to sell for.

  11. If Adult content were permissible in private parcels on Moderate, I'd be more interested in buying Moderate land. I actually have been trying to sell the land I have on Sansara (in Hogadon if anyone's wondering) so I could buy an extension to the land I bought on Zindra from the Lindens before a Land baron picked it up (hence why I'm somewhat miffed about it - I would have been less miffed if it were a private user, then I could actually negotiate to buy a small part of the land off them to make what I have a full 2048 parcel, rather then them owning a 2530sqm parcel and leaving me with the 1530 I have, instead of charging an exorbitant price for land.

If the Barons want to make a profit, then they should - However, they've long since gone beyond what would be seen as the Optimal Price Point to me and many others.

As I stated in another thread......As long as someone, somewhere is paying the tier on the land, Linden Lab has no concerns. Now if the real estates companies decide to abandon the land then some concerns may arise from the Lab.

Land Barons usually know how to price the land and adjust accordingly to changes in the market. Just because you don't feel a piece of land is worth 12KL doesn't mean the next resident will feel the same.

Which is going to happen sooner or later if and when prices keep going up or staying as they are. I don't know anyone who would pay 1,000 bucks for a half sim. 50 bucks for a 2048sqm parcel, maybe. But honestly, If anything - at least make it so that Land Barons can't buy up abandoned land outside of auctions.

  13. So far on Zindra I've seen miles and miles of land for sale and no one buying them because the land barons are charging outrageous prices for them. 1,200 USD for A HALF SIM, AND 50 USD FOR 2048sqm of land!  I could buy a full simulator from LL and spend 3 months worth of Maintenance fees on the money for that half sim ALONE! I understand the Lindens want to run a Minarchy and not want to stick their hand in things lest they break crap, but there has to be some resolution to the problem of exorbitant land prices. A 2048 Square meter parcel shouldn't cost 12,000L$! At most, it should be around 9,000 or 8,000!

It's going to get to the point where, outside of a small select few - No one will buy the land! I've owned land for quite some time, and even though I've gotten some of that land for a steal through LL's Abandoned Land program, I wouldn't mind paying a higher rate. And god above will I wonder what the Lindens will do when a bunch of real estate agencies own all this land, and no one will buy them.

And before you pull out the near-ad-hominem 'hurr-durr get a job' Crap, I get paid 32,400 USD a year.

  14. There was also a recent DNS failure over in the EU that LL reported, but I don't know if that was on LL's ISP's DNS' end or the EU DNS Root's end.

I'd suggest disabling the firewall temporarily to see if that will resolve it. If you're using a router, you may need to port forward Second Life. Check your Router/Firewall's manual and open/port forward these Ports.

You will need your local IP address for port forwarding - this can be obtained on windows by pressing Win-R, and entering CMD into the run box. Then type ipconfig into the command prompt and look for the Network Adapter actively being used on your machine. Then look for the 'IPv4 Address'. Use that in port forwarding to ensure that the ports being forwarded are from your machine.

    Port Protocol Used For
53 UDP and TCP DNS lookup
80 TCP Second Life web resources
443 TCP Second Life web resources/client authentication
    3478 UDP Voice/STUN traffic
    3479 UDP Voice/STUN traffic
    5060 UDP Voice/SIP traffic
    5062 UDP Voice/SIP traffic
12000-29999 UDP Voice/RTP traffic/Core protocol communication ** (see note below)
    12043 UDP and TCP Capabilities/map services/simulator communication
    12046 TCP Texture downloading
    21002 TCP Voice signaling

    Notes:

    • RTP: Real-time Transport Protocol
    • SIP: Session Initiation Protocol
    • ** Voice used to only require ports 12000-17000 UDP while Second Life needed 13000-13050 UDP. This combined range satisfies both requirements for UDP traffic.
  15. There is also the Avatar 2.0 and Kemono bodies for Utilizator, but those are more for users seeking an anime or furry avatar repectively. That and the features of each are somewhat sparse compared to ones such as the Maitreya Lara and Belleza bodies.

I for one have been using a hybrid body consisting of SInterest Venus Breasts, Utilizator's M3, and, BANNED booty and a set of slink hands and feet., which is starting to fail for me due to the fact that the BANNED creator was hacked or something like that. I can't precisely remember, but ever since hearing about it, I can't create more banned appliers for my clothing, which is the reason i've been lusting after the Maitreya Lara, which my friend Lori uses. It's really nice according to a review, and like Bobbie said, is Omega and Slink standard compliant, so I don't have useless clothing cluttering up my already "filled to the proverbial brim" inventory.

So In my opinion, I'd suggest you do your research and see what mesh body fits you.
