  1. Thought I'd give it a go.

Note that the region names are given for most because they're usually large areas, though for East River, I suggest you follow along the road going northeast as you'll start to see signs that will lead you into downtown East River directly.

  2. You can set yourself up a decent SL-oriented computer rig using the following specs:

    AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    NVIDIA GTX 1660 (or 1650)
    16 GB DDR4 RAM
and a decent SSD for SL cache will have you running pretty well. I'm going to be running a comparable setup but with a 1060 I already own as opposed to a 1660. A word of warning, however - some AMD Motherboards on certain chipsets may need a BIOS Upgrade to use the BIOS, but this is usually with older motherboards that were flashed with a old BIOS from the factory from before the new firmware was aailable and newer ones already support Third-gen Ryzen. If you end up with a Mobo that doesn't work, contact AMD for a upgrade kit and they'll send you a cheapo Athlon CPU so you can actually boot into the BIOS and install the firmware update. If you're not certain, check with the manufacturer's website.

Also, some may say that Intel is better but these days Intel and AMD's latest offerings are more neck and neck than anything (as a owner of a FX-series CPU I know what crappy single core performance looks like). AMD is the cheaper alternative for CPUs and unlike before Ryzen, it actually is, as I said, on par with if not sometimes slightly better than Intel in terms of performance.

I was curious, and the answer is no. Personally as a land owner who rented out places I would be worried about not enforcing the LL TOS.... sounds like a nightmare of problems later if you don't comply.

I have to side with the DreamSeeker Estates people. They're not obliged to enforce copyright on their land. That's Linden Lab's job and they won't do ***** unless a DMCA is filed.

Also, to annoy every uptight person in this thread, as someone who's researched it for years - "Copyright law is a joke."

If you want to go for a drive, just ask! Zindra's nice this time of the decade!

But seriously, Zindra's roadside appearance has gotten better in recent years, a lot less of the gaudy walled up sex places at ground level, and the north coast is a treat to drive around in.

  5. I'm certain adult activities will not be effected by this. To the chagrin of Any company that Linden Lab works with, Sex sells a lot - Hell, we have an entire *****ing continent dedicated to it - Zindra - to deny the residents full (virtual) bodily autonomy within their legal rights as adults would at best just be an insult to the whole point of SL, and at worst, would cause catastrophic damage to the economy of SL. It wouldn't be the end of the world (immediately), but I know I'd probably spend less time in SL knowing I couldn't get dirty with some of my friends-with-benefits.

One thing I can think could be worse?  This was mentioned to me recently --- if Disney was acquiring LL.

Disney wouldn't touch Linden Lab and Second Life thereby with a bargepole. I would make damn sure of that myself, as would any upstanding resident. The Disney Corporation is a parasite that if I found it bleeding out and dying, would just sit there and laugh at it.

No, not making replicas of regions.  Relocating their whole regions or trading their land in one for land in another that is hosted more advantageously for them.

Ah, as in allowing a region/estate owner to select which RL region their sim is located. Yeah, That would be good.

I am sure all this negativity will help guide the decision making process.

    Continental drift may occur.

I would like to try having some simulators in places around the world and to let people transfer to them when it benefits them.

That amounts to instancing, which goes against SL's core design principles.

13-15 year olds are still allowed on the grid just with certain restrictions and must be part of an affiliated organization.

Honestly, I hold the opinion that the 'affiliated organization' section should be expanded to *all* minors. Those that are underage (as reported) are isolated to G-rated sims, restricting them from quite a lot of the non-adult content in SL because it's present on M-rated or A-rated sims. This turns most people away from accessing SL in its' full glory. I know if I was underage I'd have lost interest in SL by 1 year in at the most because of lack of stuff to do. That or well, I think those who've visited porn sites at ages under 18 before probably know the rest of that song and dance. (Hey, some of us have done it at one point or another.)

And from what I know, minors make up a extreme minority of SL residents, probably smaller than that of actual transwomen in SL (like myself). Why are we leaving a loophole in for what amounts to a extreme minority?

There are definitely kids coming on SL and playing, only a couple of days ago I had to ban someone from my sim because when I asked them about their occupation they said they were in middle school, the occurrence that something like that happens isn't rare. I have a younger sister IRL who caught me playing and was very interested, we got her the sims. Kids do like the idea of playing in a virtual world, hence minecraft and the like are so popular

I understand that, and honestly I'd be open to the idea of bringing back Teen SL for those from 13-18 if it can be done so in a fashion that is profitable and not a piggy bank burner like Sansar was. But minors don't really belong here in an environment where they could potentially be taken advantage of if they're one of the (probably many who falsify their age.

Not sure on the former, but I believe they're referring the land baron problem. While I don't have a problem with say, Luxory or the Chungs, I will say that companies like LIFE properties are a plague on SL.

YOU were assuming.  I was pointing out with facts why I think you are wrong.  Other people reading your comment might not know the history of Tillia since  it was much more behind the scenes until recently.  I answered you more for them than for you.

    Good day, all!

Just jumping in to respond to a few of the comments...

A few folks are speculating that this is the end of SL and nothing could be further than the truth. Any talk of dismantling or radically changing the fundamentals of SL that we know and love is inaccurate. While we can't get into specific details about the deal itself, I want to emphasize the fact that this keeps Linden Lab as an independent venture led by two investors who have a great deal of awareness about what SL is and isn't. They are excited to join and help us grow both SL and Tilia while also respecting and recognizing the needs and sensitivities of the existing culture and community.

I swear you know the right time to come in for everything, Brett. Also, I posited this to Ebbe on Twitter, but wanted to bring it up here - would it possible to have a 'meet the investors' Q&A thing of sorts on Youtube or something to learn more about the acquisition and other questions people might have? Would really help calm the tides as it were.

    Edit:
You literally answered the question I asked. I need to read through a thread before responding - I'm looking forward to meeting them, then!

I am just astounded that you can't upload mesh under Linux. I mean, what is the licensing issue exactly? They're your 3d creations? What am I missing here

It probably has to do with Havok's licensing. Havok as far as I am aware does not provide support for Linux.

  13. Regarding the Wine ban, it's very odd that it's acting that way. I've used Black Dragon on WINE and was able to log into Second Life without a Hardware Ban notice.

What version of WINE are you running with Firestorm? Are you using Wine Stable or Staging? Also, I'd recommend upgrading to a later LTS version if able, as 16.04 is pretty old by this date.

  14. As someone who uses Discord, Linden Lab should really consider changes to the group chat system,

    I dislike Discord intensely.

    I will never use it.

It smells of Googlelikeness and Facebooklikeness, and I don't trust it. (I don't use those either)

There, someone had to say it.

How? As far as I'm aware Discord isn't one of those companies. By that logic, why are you here? Linden Lab is in a similar boat.

...would you use it? (By offline I mean you still have stuff like the open world, avatar customization, and building...but no other residents to interact with.)

I probably would, but it would be more boring without the other people though. So I wouldn't use it as much as the online Second Life.

There *was* such a thing with one of SL's predecessors in Virtual Worlds, ActiveWorlds. You could log in, walk around a bit, and if you had no internet connection and just wanted to screw around with stuff, it'd essentially use your cache data to provide you access to worlds in AW.

    Quote

Definitely. I'd prefer that to the OpenSim standalones. I do all my creating and testing on it before uploading to the main grid.

It does get lonesome after a while if you spend too much time creating. There's no one else there to appreciate your efforts.

I've always wanted SL to be like AW in one aspect. You could host your own "region" or "estate" on your pc with it's own object path on your pc. I think the stumbling block for SL is inventory and how to make it all work with the MP and inworld purchases. Somehow, I know it will work and people would love it which would give LL a means to lower land prices and increase income. It would attract more people and increase retainage.

Enzo and Ebbe should get together and have a talk.

    - Selene Gregoire (Sorry, quotes are a bit borked)

As a long time user of SL, and a history with AW, that's a snowball's chance in hell. If my recollections are valid, AWI doesn't have a good opinion of the Lindens, as it got to the point that SL was driving people away from Activeworlds that a Customs bot would ban you on the spot if you even mentioned Second Life or SL in passing. I doubt that over time Rick Noll (E N Z O) has let SL's hype bring AW into a death knell slide.

You forgot the part that says: Linden Lab will consider names that are clearly made up or composite (for example, "SecondLife" or "Agilent").

It doesn't need to end in Corp/Inc/LTD/corporate speak. It just can't be something that sounds like a real surname, like Smith, Johnson, Williams, Miller, Wilson, etc.

Twitch, Streemr, Seamstress, Newguy, Paladin, [insert name you want], etc. would be up for consideration. Besides, Oz himself linked that page in response to someone else wanting a unique name. If you really wanna pay that fee, you can always ask if the name you want is up for approval. There's no requirement that you have to have a corporation of any kind.

But the name I desire does sound like a real surname. It's not *MY* real surname, but one associated with my avatar. Also, it doesn't defeat it's initial intent of being used for business ventures, and even if it was, I'd sooner spit on a linden than be charged one month's SSDI payments upfront for a goddamn name change, and I wouldn't tolerate this 40 dollar wannabe comedy skit on greed either.
