  1. Worked for me! I was using Alchemy and it always did it. I have Catznip viewer too... I don't know if that does it and I'm scared to try haha Official SL viewer works fine.
  2. SL isn't especially demanding. Any mid-range gaming PC should do it. Hell even low-end ones will probably just about cope! Just focus on graphics card and RAM, although of course the other components have to be passable to not significantly bottleneck the machine. It really depends what level of performance you desire. I play SL at mid-high and I'm pretty content
  3. I actually tend to find FS and other less stable than the official viewer, at least in Windows. But that's just my experience
  4. Just the little niggles that I think would make a big difference if smoothed out! 1) Remove that silly look follows cursor thing! I have to explain to everyone who plays how to turn it off just so their avatar doesn't gaze around like an idiot! lol :) 2) Change the default avatar animations. I'm not sure if this has been done already, but the clunky-looking default animations put me off SL a few times when I was a newbie 3) Improve the Destinations panel a bit! It feels very simple... I really think it could be made into a much more welcoming and fleshed-out hub of suggestions that would help people not to feel so lost! It wouldn't have to be overly-complicated... just a bit more substantial is all! And that's the core of it, I do think many of the cool changes have been made already, but I care about SL and I want to help it to be bigger and stuff and help newbies! I think these three changes will remove three common "papercuts" when starting SL - some clunky avatar details, and feeling "lost". So yeah erm, other than that good stuff! Oh, and I do wish land wasn't so darn pricey ._. But I know you get what you pay for. Anyway, peace dudes! Mike :)
  5. Hello peeps! I have a question! I am looking for an area to socialise in in SL... kind of... ambient and calming, with a focus on carefree interaction with others and beauty and... I guess I miss another game called Phantasy Star Universe, which had wonderful social hubs (unfortunately, PSU is no longer online). I'll post a video or two of it, and maybe you guys can let me know if any nice places on SL come to mind? If not, I might create one :) Thanks, guys n gals!
  6. Just wanted to bump this as it's still bugging me haha I take it there's been no progress? I am genuinely looking at alternatives to SL because I see it as very significant >.< Also... it's the only thing that bugs me when I'm recommending the game to others, as otherwise I totally love SL. Come on LL!!! I love ya dudes but you need to fix this!
  7. Thanks for the replies! I actually didn't mean the proper established group chat, maybe what I meant was "multi-user chat", like when you invite another person to a private conversation and then you all chat. However, both forms of group chat appear to have similar issues so they're probably facing exactly the same problem(s).
  8. Doesn't it kinda suck? Why don't they fix this? So many bugs are fixed in SL I know and I really, truly appreciate that but... group chat is REALLY important for a social game. Why hasn't this been done? I find it terribly laggy and sometimes it loses messages and sometimes it just gives up completely. What gives? :( Is there any way around this, or?
  9. To be honest, I'm the sort of person who would just put that little bit longer into working in RL to support playing SL! But if you do want to make money in the game itself... I'm new as well but I would imagine the approach is similar to real life. What you need to think is "What would make people part with their money and give it to me?"... like, anything that people will happily give you their hard earned (Linden) dollars, is probably a good idea! Usually I spend my Linden dollars on new gear for my avatar (which can of course be made and sold) or tipping DJs (so of course you could just be a DJ). Any form of dancing is probably good (not just pole dancing I wouldn't think). Perhaps services for other avatars in-world, like helping people out with things they don't know how to do. Not sure what else really... but I hope that helped anyway
  10. ah yes I have an Android client! I use Lumiya but I'm reading there is a free one too called LittleSight. Doesn't help me now because I already paid the £1.80 for Lumiya, but might be good for other peeps! Is the Mobile Grid Client good? I heard it was kinda pricey? EDIT -- Oh wait you said Grid MANAGER, sorry
  11. haha thanks - I particularly like my parrot but yeah it's been mega fun! And on Facebook I'm Hoppimike (and on SL) so... yeah! Do you guys use any kind of text/2D client too for when you can't run the full client or want it as more of a background thing? I have been using Metabolt
  12. Thank you! Although I still can't work out how you guys have those cool background pictures behind your display pictures here on the forums...
  13. Thank you for the nice posts everyone! I shared them on Facebook too but I usually don't get much support for them - most people don't really "get" SL! I am friending more and more SL residents on there too now though But yeah it has been really fun and an amazing experience really - it's incredible that you can even achieve and do all of this just from a PC. It really is amazing SL brings us together and gives us a shared, awesome experience to enjoy! And yeah guys if you wanna add me or invite me to things or anything then go for it! I do need to find places to go OTHER than Beachwood, Venice and a small handful of other places!
  14. Well, just over 2 weeks... maybe 16/17 days! It's been a great ride so far! Can't wait to experience more! ^_^ http://imgur.com/a/jvOpG#0 You can also see the gradual development of my avatar xD
  15. I agree with you completely! I think it's just because the game engine is old and seems to have been designed for the old style of clothing before mesh (hence why that one works so painlessly, but looks the worst). The lack of better default animations is a mystery to me. Unless the defaults simply work for all avatars, and so they're safe choices? I'm not sure. All of this stuff is probably being enthusiastically addressed as we speak, but probably for the upcoming High Fidelity "game" and not SL. At present SL is aging but there is no newer game to pass the crown on to, so to speak. So things are a bit clunky and dated. SL is perfectly passable I think though and a great experience even despite these shortcomings, but it would be nice to see them smoothed out!
  16. To be honest I'd be pretty surprised and confused if SL failed to maintain a reasonable popularity level until a true "successor" comes along. I'd imagine that there are always social MMO "gamers". They're not going anywhere And SL is still REALLY busy I think - I couldn't believe how packed it was when I came over from other social MMOs like Entropia and Onverse. I was blown away!
  17. lol Yeah it is a bit much! I do hope they fix it soon. and what you mean you're not interested in an astrologer or love guru or a "love marriage problem solution"?
  18. Oh no no not every post, just on new user registration, to stop the bots from registering in the first place. The invisible field you don't even see (only bots "see" it and fill it in - that's how you know that they're bots), I think it also only allows through registrations where the person is using JavaScript, because like 99.9% of people use JS and like 99.9% of bots DON'T! Also, the question and answers are MEGA easy, at least for a human. Probably a nightmare for a bot. ReCaptcha is the Google captcha technology and seems pretty good.
  19. Oh, as for the game and char thing, they're just words. Don't read into them so much. Sometimes I just say game instead of world or char instead of avatar but I am typing fast or whatever, and also I am one of the more casual SL players who a) doesn't really care what it gets called and b) thinks the popularity of the game is actually hindered by this kind of thing because it suggests elitism and a clique...
  20. My first reaction to what you said about the asserted "losers" in Second Life was merely "So?" lol. Simply because... if they enjoy it, they enjoy it. They're not the entire playerbase and even if they were, who are we to judge As I say I am very live and let live - as long as people are happy and not hurting others then I say have at it, and would normally say that people who insult them should be ashamed, and probably have self-worth issues THEMSELVES! Having said that though I entirely understand why a broader audience is desirable. I think the only thing that might put off that broader audience really are things in SL that are too technical, like the things I mentioned in my first post. "Normal people" tend to be quite casual so SL has to be casual as well to truly appeal to them, or at least casual to interact with. I'm glad that the new CEO seems good, and also glad that SL gives people who might otherwise have almost nowhere somewhere to go. For me, SL is definitely helping me to come out of my shell more and understand what I want more in reality. By going to SIMULATIONS of different social environments, I can almost "test" them on a personal level, without having to fly out to the Caribbean or Ibiza, or live in a hippy commune, or any number of the other social and physical environments I've enjoyed in SL
  21. Ah yes sorry - the chart was Google Trends, I must have forgotten to write that! I also found this chart at MMOData.net which is interesting and not quite as bleak-looking: http://users.telenet.be/mmodata/Charts/PCUShard.png It does seem that overall SL is still very lively. It's just a shame that the buzz has dropped so far but I suppose it's inevitable. On Google Trends its search popularity is now roughly equal to EVE Online, whereas at the peak it was obviously way, way, way higher! But it is true that for an immersive, online, social world, SL is so far ahead of the current competition that it's kind of crazy! Every other one I tried feels lacking in features and lacking in people. IMVU is now significantly more popular than SL, but IMVU truly is just a "3D chat room" as far as I can tell - it's pretty unfulfilling if you're looking for something more than that. Just still odd that even the projected search popularity for SL still drops. I know it doesn't entirely reflect actual user numbers, but... if they ARE dropping, I still don't get where they're actually going instead
  22. It's weird. I've run a pretty popular forum for almost 5 years now and we get zero spam AFAIK. I implemented a number of anti-spam techniques into the registration system. I believe what worked for me is a combination of a recaptcha code, JavaScript hidden field and a randomised question and answer system related to the subject matter of the website. There is a little more but I think no bot can get through all 3 together!
  23. Aw but I'm not a creator or artist lol I just wanted a social MMO with an exploration component and that's exactly what SL gave me I do know what you mean about impatient gamers. SL takes time to grow on you and you need to be willing to kind of "kick back" in it - explore and shop and chat and all the things you'd do in reality. It's interesting hearing it from a content creator's POV though. SL feels dead to you? To me it does feel very populated but it depends where I go. I've never noticed SL to be quiet, I've just been told that it used to be busier!
