So anyway, is this griefing? It's a much gentler kinder form of exclusion than a zero notice, TP you home security system. But still, is it possible for people to be offended and complain?

No, its on your land. Your not trying to crash them, your not really attacking them per say. It gently pushes them to the edge of the parcel. The most you might get is some entitled whiney ass complaining that they feel they have some right to go wherever they like. Its not like your up and dropping a whole box of d**ks on them that fly round and orbit the person. I wouldn't consider this griefing at all.

There is absolutely no chance of that happening. Not so much that it's you, although that would be a good enough reason, but because I rarely set foot outside my own place.

Now now Phil, lets keep it nice and chill xD

Even if I could code C++, OpenGL, and decipher the SL codebase and architecture, there's still an underlying issue. A lot of my ideas are back-end related and getting the Lab to do anything back-end related would probably be shot down in an instant. IMO, for anything major to be done with SL, it would require not just front-end implementation, but much back-end implementation as well.

Share your ideas. What would you change?

Well you are wasting your time and I wasnt making a complaint. I do not want wisdom from someone who needs to insult people to make a point .  My avatar is 11 years old and I have spent more money then I want to admit creating content and events for free.  Why dont you get off your " lazy backside" and socialize in SL ?  I think you need a hug and some friends.

Now who's offended?. You were making a complaint. My point stands. If you want it to change....do something about it. I socialise plenty in SL but my main reason for being on SL is creation and development.

Did you take this personally ?  LOL .  I wasnt trying to insult you .

I can think of two combat sims where I was never asked to buy ONE thing . Now that I think of it, some of the sims I used to frequent  did have affiliate vendors .  No  I do not feel like it should be done for free and that wasnt what I was trying to say . I dont want anything. My point was that people are no longer passionate about building and creating in SL .

No, I didn't take it personally. Just imparting some wisdom. We have SO many people that come on this forum that make exactly the same complaints and I pretty much give all of them the same response. IF you want there to be more in SL then YOU have to be the one to do it. Its easy enough to complain but you like so many others are not willing to make the changes you all call out for. I agree with you on some parts, there is definitely less in SL than there used to be and if I see one more "hangout" sim ima loose my sh*t xD (Okay not really but everything is a hangout sim now). But its down to us as the residents to change that.

Huh??   Never but the sim is usually promoting a business, shops or club where someone is being tipped for paid.

Im referring to cultural sims, combat sims, etc .  Of course these sims still exist but some of the best have left SL .

Your post reeks of ignorance, no offence. I have hosted several combat sims in my time in Second Life all hosting a combat system of some form that I have coded myself. Ranging from basic systems through to MMORPG style systems with questing, teaming, npcs, stats, game money, action bar spell system etc etc. Even though I gave out the main HUD and maybe a starter attack or two for free the rest of the stuff you had to buy using lindens. Lots of these "FREE" combat, role-play, whatever sims do exactly the same thing and sell items on the sim in order to make some kind of money....especially before the tier reductions....to go towards the high cost of maintaining a sim like that. I can't think of all that many sims in the past near 12 years of being on SL that have given you absolutely EVERYTHING for free and have shouldered the $295USD cost (at the time) of renting a sim. Most if not all of them have had some kind of secondary revenue stream whether its renting stores to sim members, selling products of their own or charging for more advanced tools and weapons. No offence but not all of us are super duper rich and can afford to just throw hundreds of dollars at SL each month so self entitled nitwits like you can have somewhere to go and play entirely for free, we as developers need monetary help also to go towards the cost of doing something like that.

If you feel that SL is dying and people should be creating totally free experiences for all to enjoy then perhaps you should go and teach yourself how these things are developed and create your own experience on a 20k prim sim, shoulder the cost and give out all the products YOU make for free. There is nothing to stop you from getting up off your lazy backside and doing something about that instead of sitting around complaining in the forum that "SL is dying!". SL is a world where the residents decide the type of content that is contained within. Its easy enough to start complaining on a forum so put your money where your mouth is and do something about it?.

Iv been coding in LSL for around 10 years now and over that time have taught myself skills in modelling, texturing, animation, hud design, sound editing, particle design. I now use those skills to create things relating to my passions. They range from role-play and combat MMORPG sims to random little knick knacks. All it takes is a little effort and the willingness to try. If you want more in SL....CREATE IT

apparently on a frequent regular basis. The safe hubs are like the breeding ground in SL for pond scum. If you don't like getting those types of messages then stay away from them permanently. I'm female both RL and SL and I never ever get any messages like that.

I feel like everyone else is getting some serious attention in Second Life and yet the weirdos see me and are like "Guys no....shes weirder than us.....lets leave her alone....we don't mess with her....".

Sounds like your having fun in SL though! more power to you! ^_^

  7. Me and my friends and even others I have spoken to can not connect to voice and haven't been able to pretty much since last night. Anyone know anything?. Theres nothing listed on the SL status page about the voice service being down but there seems to definitely be some kind of issue

My wishlist for 2019 (and 2020 and possibly forever): an option for an improved built in standard avatar

I agree with you on this. As much as I love my classic avatars. It would be pretty neat if they created a DECENT looking default bento avatar to replace the current system body. I doubt they would do it though as it would take revenue away from other mesh body creators. It is in need of doing though. The new "starter" avs they created are "okay" but something more customisable and dedicated would be amazing.

    * First name / last name selection ability for ALL players, fee-free and regardless of membership type

This!...absolutely. Though I understand that LL needs to make money in order to continue operating. I would be happy if they just removed the premium requirement. At least then its only one single payment instead of having to pay for premium and THEN having to pay for a name change. Or if they allowed a name change in one of the new premium packages they are going to be offering.

Do people still use these?. I haven't seen a money tree in years.

    * A ban on ALL banline systems that offer less than 100 seconds to leave the area - and punishment for those who set them for quicker ejection periods. Disabled people use SL too!

You would hate my land then. I have my security system set to boot someone as soon as they step a foot in there.

    * Utilisation of abandoned land for independent/unfunded educational and arts-related projects.

This is a neat idea. It would help make use of the wasteland that is Mainland. But then I guess the answer to that would be "What will LL charge us for elsewhere to make up for them not getting any tier during that period" xDD

Yes.  Zi Ree, one of the Firestorm devs had rudimentary working mirrors in Firestorm.
She attached a patch for the LL viewer on STORM-2055 - Real mirror reflections on prims

Firestorm wasn't allowed to release with it, even as an experimental feature because it was against "the shared experience".

Im guessing this is because Firestorm is self certified as a third party viewer and has to adhere to certain standards because of that?. I mean you could technically argue that half of the features in firestorm are against "the shared experience" when you compare the lack of features the official viewer has. Or the enhanced visuals of Black Dragon compared to other viewers. Or the cool viewer which has numerous fixes and enhancements that the official and other viewer does not. How do they define the shared experience?. They will hate me as a viewer developer then if I do take this up. My ideas definitely move away from a shared experience ha

  11. Firstly happy new year to you all!!

So, its 2019. What do you guys want to see brought to SL this year. Whether user a user created product or service or by the virtue of the gods over at Linden Lab?. One thing iv been giving thought to is learning C++ and starting to mess around with the viewer code, I have some neat ideas I would like to implement. What about the rest of you?

Permissions are a very simple contract that you can break at any time and at no cost.

If you don't want to give your permissions, don't join the experience.

You totally missed the point of what i was saying. I was commenting on a new way of possibly handling them. I'm aware of how permissions work.  I also mention literally a comment or so before that....that I don't join experiences if I don't want to. So please...

A : Read what people actually write

B : The entire thread so you see what other things they have already written

I would start by giving a real-life feel of a map, maybe show whats navigatable on the water as it little confusing at the moment, maybe more info about a places of sale rather than having to go to the place, just a general feeling of  map of 2019.

I think the problem you would have is that the map system would require a total overhaul for that to work. It would require all new EVERYTHING and in the grand scheme of things in SL is probably one of the least important things that needs updating. Let alone how much of a pain it would be to do all of that. It wouldn't just be the map system that would need updating either it would be various other parts of the SL experience such as new options added to about land so you can specify what type of parcel your plot is and then figure out how to display all this to the user when looking at the map. Especially on mainland and in sims that have been cut up into 2342342 uber tiny parcels and each one would need to display its individual data along with store all of that data. Even if you had a small pop up when you clicked on each parcel that displayed all of this info it would still be a cumbersome thing for LL to do. Its a nice idea but I doubt it would ever happen. There are more important things for LL to fix, release, create, develop before they do anything with the map.

That's another interesting approach, similar in spirit to the way that some RL security systems generate a new passcode that is only valid for a short time. The user carries a device -- perhaps an app in a cell phone -- that uses Unix time and the user's own ID to generate a unique passcode.  The server that manages the security system uses that same algorithm to generate a matching passcode.  Both are updated every 20 or 30 seconds, giving the user just enough time to log in with the current valid passcode before it changes again.  I've seen a system like that in RL but never tried scripting one in SL. It would be kind of fun.

Yep!. Iv used a more enhanced version of it when encrypting messages but originally its how I did channels in an old combat system of mine. I had that generating a new channel every X seconds and to catch late messages I had a buffer channel. When a new channel is created the buffer became the previous used channel for 10 seconds. It made the system really quite secure at the time because even if someone did find the channel it was gone within 20 seconds.

i have a number of lights that i attach from inventory that are controlled with a HUD also attached from inventory. i've set the listen channel in both scripts manually. all good. now i'm wanting the channels to be set randomly each time they are attached. how do i get the channels to sync up?

If you want to do it and interesting way.....and you don't care about them being truly random then you could maybe use server time to generate a channel....but like this....

    integer randomChannel=(integer)("0x"+llGetSubString(llSHA1String((string)(llGetUnixTime()/10)+"!?"),3,10));

This would return the exact same number in each script without any need to start sending messages between objects and would generate a different number every 10 seconds if re used.

    Have fun!

I did all that.  Teleport Home took me to a safe hub.

Then you have done as much as you can. Beyond submitting a ticket to Linden Lab to ask them to look into it there isn't much more you can do. I wouldn't worry about it, sometimes weird stuff happens. If you have eliminated the main points covered in the responses here then there isn't much else we can really suggest to you to do. I would just move on from it and put it down to weirdness.
