  1. We didn't see any large issues with the RC code last week, but given the complexities of the project we wanted to give it more time to soak in RC. That means that we will not have a channel to promote this week. There will be no code promoted to the main channel. We will however probably do a rolling restart of the main channel Tuesday morning for stability reasons.

    Second Life Server (main channel)
There is no promotion to main channel this week. This will be the same code as before. Rolling restart likely.

    Second Life RC BlueSteel
    This is a "Maint-Server" branch.
    • No new features.
      • This release is focused on internal stability with networking code.
      • Modified existing throttles and caps on network traffic.
    • Bug Fixes
      • Several fixes for certain crashmodes involved with SVC-7713 "sim crashes all avatars on sim (dosent restart but crash all viewers) multiple times a day"

    Second Life RC LeTigre
This will get the same maint-server code as is on BlueSteel

    Second Life RC Magnum
This will continue to host the Threaded Region Crossing Phase One code.

We will be monitoring this thread during the next week so please feel free to post issues that you feel have been introduced by the new code. Please file a JIRA for issues you find and post the JIRA link into this thread. It really helps us out. When determining if issues are relevant or not research is key. Tracking down exactly the right situation where an issue is occurring greatly speeds up the development process to get fixes in place.
I appreciate your help. Have a good week!

    Hi Oskar,

Yes I run into the identical issue on the main. Also I noticed that I can play sounds locally they play right off. If I then after play locally play the sound in world then it will play right away. This sounds like a preloader or pointer issue in the inventory?

Do all viewers exhibit this issues?

    Hi,

Since the rolling restarts regular sounds require being played twice to hear as if they were not preloaded. Looped sounds require 10 to 20 seconds to start playing. Gestures require the same amount of time to start playing including text. The problem coincides with the release of the new viewers though I noticed this issue before I upgraded my viewer. My question is this a server issue or a viewer issue?

Does the issue exist on servers that are running the main channel code?

    Hello Oskar

was there any changes to search in this deploy, I see that several people have reported new search problems starting on the 13th.  I check my search placement daly and dint see the same problems but starting on the 15th last night I noticed that group and people search new only show results for exact matches.  I've tested it on the current LL viewer and on firstorm so it dosent seam to be a viewr issue.

The way our systems are configured server changed don't affect the search systems. Nothing we've changed would affect search. I don't think there were any scheduled changes for the search systems. If I learn otherwise I'll let you know.

If you are really doing a restart of bluesteel and letigre and they need it, yesterday inventory work was as usual a disaster and a step backward, it would be nice if you posted some notes about what you are trying to do so we can watch for bugs.

I do post notes. You're reading them.

Yes, Oskar, it worked well (the heads up, I mean...though the code sadly didn't).  Apart from my natural paranoia!  One of these days I will learn to be calm...one of these days.:smileyembarrassed:

I can handle code that doesn't work well. My whole career is built around the realization that code doesn't work well. We've built this process because code often doesn't work well. The process we have does work well though.

    Hi Oskar,

A suggestion/Idea if I may, for future deployments of RC code. Include in the release notes a section that lists possible areas that may be impacted by the upgrade in order for us as RC testers to give a more structured response. As a guess I assume that the server code is segmented in to separate areas that for example one may control TP's and another movement etc.

Many times bugs may overlap or be from a totally different source such as a viewer update. This will also help in structuring when a JIRA should or should not be filed. Many times an issue may not be so major to file a JIRA however if we spot something like that it will help immensely for the next weeks release.

Optimize the use of we RC testers to make SL the best it ever was
    :)

I usually try to do just that. Last week I communicated that there were changes in the Inventory API on the BlueSteel and LeTigre regions. In this case it really helped. Last Thursday residents recognized that there were inventory issues on BlueSteel and LeTigre, they looked at the release notes and saw that there were inventory specific changes on BlueSteel and LeTigre. Then they checked that things worked fine on Magnum and the main channel. Then they filed a bug. I took that bug to the team and the team decided that because of those issues this code could not be promoted. The whole process worked just as expected.

I almost feel relieved by this extra stability, but could you give a pointer to some info on the InventoryAPI issues. Is it something we should be watching for, or did it never get out of the beta RCs? Or is it something that arose from the Unplanned Maintenance on the 10th.

The inventory issues are discussed in this thread:

The issues were linked only to BlueSteel and LeTigre and never left the RC. The bugs are still on BlueSteel and LeTigre until tomorrow morning if you would like to look at them.

  11. The issues found in this RC were always considered bugs and there wasn't an intention to promote the code. We put things into RC to find issues like this. We also beta test them on ADITI. This code was on ADITI and there was an open beta test that I encouraged people to attend. We recognized these issues by Friday morning and have been working on fixes since then. Wednesday we will update the code with the bug fixes.

  12. MB, I appreciate the work you do and your patience. I agree that there latent region crossing issues especially for vehicles. We know this, we understand this, we're constantly working on ways to improve region crossings. The largest reason we created the RC channel promotion system was to determine new issues. When a new, never before seen, issue arises in an RC we can easily find and fix it in a timely manner. Issues that exists for all of Second Life, and have for a long time, take longer to fix. That doesn't mean that region crossing issues are not important. It does mean that for the scope of your regions on Magnum we need to be able to determine that issues are new. If you find an issue on your regions that is not reproducible on the main grid then we can determine that it is a newly introduced issue and we take those very seriously.

I do understand your need to run a business and if you feel that your business will be more successful on the main branch I will move them over to it.

    Hi,

I'm wondering on the status of
. This relates to not being able to cross sim borders with cars on Magnum. It's been another month after more information was requested that I supplied. Is more information needed, if so what specific information is needed? I need to be able to inform my friends and customers of any progress being made and if you note 85 people voted on this issue. Being that my sims are racing/driving sims it is imperative that we can drive between them. It's been three months since filling the JIRA and sorry to say the lack of any response at all even an acknowledgment that it was even read sure makes one feel ignored and not a valued customer

Don't tell me there has been a "lack of any response at all even an acknowledgment". Both TJ Linden and Caleb Linden replied. TJ moved your regions closer to each other in the datacenter to make region crossings work better. Caleb came to your regions and attempted to reproduce the issue but could not. The code that would have been causing issues on your simulator was moved to the main channel in early December. If the issue was as severe as you are claiming then every region in the grid would be experiencing the issue and would have been for 3 months now.

If issues like this are new and tied to an RC they will replicate in each region in that channel. If they do not then the issue exists elsewhere. We asked for more information. We can't fix issues that aren't bugs. In this case we were unable to determine that this was an issue tied to the server code. The issue as you have described it in the jira is resolved. Cars and people can cross the sim border. I will close this jira as resolved. When you have enough information to create a reliable repro situation that exhibits for vehicles and regions that are not your own please file a new jira for that specific issue.

  14. The Magnum channel RC has been experiencing a very high number of simulator crashes since the rolling restart this morning. We are rolling back that code to match Server Trunk. I apologize for any inconveience. We will commence the rollback at 5pm PT.

I updated the RC channels release dates this week. We need to change the release date from Wednesday morning to Thursday morning. I apologize for any inconvenience this might cause.
Additionally we might be doing some simulator maintenance Friday morning. Details soon if we are.

    Second Life Server (main channel)
We are promoting the code that was on LeTigre and BlueSteel last week. This is a maint-server project with some bug fixes and tweaks.
    • SVC-7631 New rate throttle on llGiveInventory. The throttle was loosened to 2.5k events per 15 minutes, double the previous value.
    • SVC-7660 http_request() fails to trigger on RC Magnum 12.01.27.248571
    • Fixed some other miscellaneous bugs, including a few crashers

    Second Life RC BlueSteel
    • This is an InventoryAPI maintenance project.
      • Improvements were made to the way inventory transactions are handled in order to improve scalability and reliability of inventory transfers.
    • Bug Fixes
      • No external bugs were fixed.

    Second Life RC LeTigre
The code in this channel is identical to the code in the BlueSteel RC channel.

    Second Life RC Magnum
This is again the Threaded Region Crossing Stage 1 Project.

As usual no mention of your intentions for the RC servers, but judging by the lead up which saw whatever progress you made over the weekend with inventory and login problems suddenly reverse and crashes again begin to multiply I am hardly optimistic, and frankly am getting tired of payin 600 dollars a year for service I cant depend on for what amounts to a paid beta.  Linden Labs needs to make stability a priority or develop an exit strategy for ending sl because it is doubtful that it can last much longer at the rate it is falling apart.

I put TBD (that means To Be Determined) and I filled out the details for Magnum. When I have the details for BlueSteel and LeTigre I'll add them. The code for those RC slots hasn't passed internal QA yet. It would be inappropriate for me to tell you what would go there when it is undecided.

  16. This week we get a free day! Don't forget about February 29th. We only get this day once every four years. Fact: I was born on this day and will be turning 9 years old. For those whose birthday is not on Leap Day enjoy your free day. You can thank Pope Gregory XIII for that. I will be taking W, Th, and F off for my birthday. Maestro wil be running the Thursday UserGroup in my absence. Have a good week!

    Second Life Server (main channel)
We are promoting the code that was on BlueSteel and LeTigre. This is the simplified voice region crossing code. There was some unnecessary info being passed on region crossings that we removed. This should make region crossings easier.

    Second Life RC BlueSteel
    TBD

    Second Life RC LeTigre
    TBD

    Second Life RC Magnum
This is again the Threaded Region Crossing Stage 1 Project.
