Hello everyone. I have come across some great SL photogrpraphy where clearly some great work was done in photoshop to make the hands and feet look more realistic than the "painted wedges" our avitars are stuck with. I wanted to see if anyone had some tips they could share, or if there are some tutorials on this topic that I could be directed towards?

All photoshop tutorials can be used on SL pictures. I google PS tutorial, and then the word I need to learn.

I make a copy of the picture first, then use Liquify, Clone or Smudge to fix cankles and breaks in the mesh. When I am satisfied, I merge the layers.

PS: It is common to use sculpted or mesh feet now.

As Marianne said, many people use sculpted feet when their feet are bare, or shoes with sculpted feet when wearing shoes that leave the feet visible. (You'll find some who love these kinds of shoes, and some who hate them, though.) There are also sculpted hands available, but I think those are less widely used. Many, many people use prim nails, though, to attach to the hands and get rid of the jagged-looking nails/fingertips. I don't have much experience with photo-editing myself, but using these things, then fiddling with them in photoshop (or any other software) to get rid of any seams, etc. seems a bit easier to me.
