Hello girl. Alt = alternative account. So, go to http://secondlife.com/ --> Join now on the left and follow steps there. That's all.

Log out of your dashboard. Go to http://secondlife.com/: choose "join now". Choose an avatar (you have many choices, human or not). Create an account. That's it! 

Please note that in the latest V3 viewer you can choose inworld from a full avatars libraries. Also remember that only Linden Dollars and transferable items can be given by your main identity to your alt.

Yes, exactly right.  That's what an alt is ..... a new account.  When you have an alt, it's like having a twin sister.  You are related, but you are two different people.  You can share some things, just the way you can share things with friends, but there are some things that are yours alone, so you cannot share them.
