Credit where credit is due, after tonights server restarts to bluesteel there is a remarkable improvement in performance both in decreased lag and improved rzz and sharper images.  Time will tell if this is a transitory event or not but even sim crossings worked well, so if somethings does not mess things up maybe this OS upgrade will prove the silver bullet we need so badly.  I still wish though that LL would be more forthcoming with information because lack of information is a major factor in player unrest and in them leaving sl.  For not thank you for a job well done and here is hoping the trend can continue beyond the next few days.

Actually they provide quite a bit of information. However, they are production people more than PR people. So, it is not that easy to keep up.

Also, server updates are a combination of planned changes, which they often can't talk about, and responses to unexpected developements that we will only ever hear about after the event. So, it is an odd mix of what information is known, provided, or withheld and when.

Probably the easy way to know what is going on is to follow a blog or two that do the hard work for you. Living in a Modem World and (Second Life Server News) have regular updates on SL tech and news. My blog  covers whatever intersts me, viewers and OpenSim/SL servers. New World Notes provides a more general and less technical look at virtual world happenings. Alpahville Harold covers the tech for SL and OpenSim as well as some of the drama related to privacy issues. And last, but not least, Daniel Voyager's blog which covers SL news.

@Nalates

So they are production people, not PR people?  So they hire some competent PR staff - simple.

As to not knowing what will happen, Yes, sometimes that is true...that does NOT mean that they do not need to tell us what they are doing.

You appear to suggest that unofficial gossip via independent blogs is the best way to hear about what's going on with SL??  That, in itself is a condemnation of Linden Lab's own communicative ability.

Yes things seem to be better at the moment, but will it stay that way?  Since we do not know (really) what is being done or for how long the disruption will last, that is really not good enough.

The defence that "They're only Geeks, what do you expect?" simply will not wash.
