Sounds like you may be logged in as basic. Log out and when you go to the login screen, under mode, choose Advanced instead of Basic.

You might have logged in with your viewer in Basic mode, which is nice a simple for a beginner but lacks most of the really useful functions of SL (like Appearance, TP, Search .... ).  Log out again, and when you log back in, select "Advanced" on the login screen.  The Appearance option should be there.
