Well if there is a way I'd like to know too, but those patches are built into the terrain system. You can use landforms and texture those as you like but for "real land" we have what we have. Not only that, once you get them set "sorta" like you want they have a tendency to shift and what was sand becomes grass. A bit disturbing.    Good luck and I hope you get an answer that will work for you.
