what is an alpha body? How do I turn it off?

One of two ways. Fastest is to detach it in the Inventory under Current Outfit. The other way is to r-click on it and if modifiable, select edit and deselect those parts you don't want the alpha active on.

An alpha mask is a specialized clothing layer. In your inventory, it has the symbol of a shirt with a grid pattern on it. It's used to hide part or all of your avatar body (or your Bakes on Mesh mesh body) so that it does not poke through your clothes.

When wearing a non-BoM mesh avatar body, you wear a "full body alpha". This hides either everything except your head, or if you are also wearing a mesh head, everything including your head. This item will come in the package with your mesh body.

You put on alpha masks by right clicking them in your inventory and choosing Add. To take one off, right click it in your inventory and choose Detach (it may be easiest to find one that you are wearing by looking in the Worn tab of the inventory window).
