Why do I always see a cloud and always wearing clothes?

It is because your avatar has not fully rezzed yet. What I do is open inventory and wait for my recent tab to stop fetching. While I am waiting, I rebake. Enable your advanced menu by pressing Ctrl Alt D, then you can rebake by pressing Ctrl Alt R.

but a clouded avatar could very well be the result of a poor connection.

it would help if we got to know something about your setup - connection/hardware as mentioned in that thread.
