If I remember correctly, the big building on Learning Island has a central garden ( an atrium, a concourse ) where you end up after you have completed the walking/hopping/flying movement tasks. When you go there, you see a talking parrot next to the portal that takes you to Social Island.  If you bailed out before you got there, you can never go back.  Don't worry, though. The "game" doesn't mind. Remember, there's no goal or quest to Second Life.  Just like RL, this world is whatever you want it to be. And you can fly.

Hi Starlet, and welcome to Second Life!

As Rolig said, the place you wind up in when you log in for the very first time is called Learning Island. It has a few basic exercises to help you learn the ropes. At the end of that, you go through a portal that teleports you to Social Island, where there are some more getting-started exercises. You can't go back to Learning Island, that's limited to brand-new Residents. But you can explore Social Island as long as you like and you can return there any time you want to.

When you feel you've exhausted things to do on Social Island, you can leave in any of several ways. You can go to the Portal Plaza, where there are several portal doors, each with its own category. The door will teleport you to a random destination within its category. Or, you can use Search (the magnifying glass icon) or Destinations (an icon like a push pin) to find places to visit. I recommend visiting one of the resident-run help and orientation areas, such as Caledon Oxbridge University or New Resident Island. There are usually live helpers there to answer your questions.
