Looks like the region you are trying to log in has problems. Try the following:

On the login screen, select "Advanced mode" as viewer mode and restart the viewer. Then select Preferences from the "Me" menu. On the "General" tab, check "Show on login screen" in the starting location part. Close preferences by clicking on okay. You should see a box where you can select your starting location. Click in that box and type in it "Aqua". Then try to login. This will try to log you in into a different region.

Hello nat.

The "Waiting for Region Handshake" message occurs when the Second Life Viewer does not receive an acknowledgement from the server.  The usual cause of this error is a firewall blocking UDP packets. Reconfigure your firewall to resolve this problem.

For information on how to configure firewalls, see:

Aww thanks so much for taking the time out to answer. Tried it but still did not work unfortunately. Guess I'll have to give up now. Been trying for hours. Froze after 3 minutes and have been trying on on off since then. Natalie x

Hi, Thanks fot taking the time out to answer. I have looked at this before and to be honest I don't have the technical know how to do any of it. Been trying for hours now. looks like fun but I don't think I will be able to use it. Worked for about 3 minutes and then just froze and I've been locked out ever since. Natalie x

That does sound like a firewall issue, you can test this by switching off the router firewall and seeing if you can get into SL, if you can then you know that you need to configure it to allow access to the necessary ports. You should be able to google for a walkhrough on how to do this for your particular router, or even contact the maker and ask for help. They really aren`t as complicated as instructions often make things sound.

Obviously don`t continue to operate with your firewall switched off, just do it as a test to confirm the problem.

I've now tried all the above and still no luck. This really is annoying me now. HELP!! would still not get past the "handshake" even with both windows and my security firewall turned off. I've opened all ports in the list also but still no good :(
