Just got the log in, but none of the buttons work, nothing moves, ....

As they didn't find my home (ofcourse not, I'm new) they've send me to a nearby location - I do not know where I am now,  can't continue to adjust my avatar.

Hi Marconer,

I highly suspect you have encountered a known issue, see https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/BUG-225655

The quick fix is to try our new EEP Second Life Viewer, with the caveat that it is a release candidate and may have other unresolved issues. You may download that viewer here: https://releasenotes.secondlife.com/viewer/6.4.0.538823.html

If this does not fix the issue please contact support, as you may have other software or hardware issues that need further diagnosis.

You may contact support here: https://lindenlab.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new

Thanks!

Thanks Lindens,

but this is chinese for me.

I am not an IT-person, so  I have no clue what to do.

And yes, a lot of you will say: but it is clear now, isn't it?

Not for me: I need clear guidelines, not three links - for me that is the same as:  I have given you links, do not bother me anymore.

Hi @Marconer!  Welcome (almost!) to Second Life.

To clarify Kyle Linden's suggestion a bit...

  • Click the first link he gave in his reply.
  • Click one of the green download buttons in the gray bar at the top of the page.  For most users, the one for 64 bit Windows will be the choice.sldownload.thumb.jpg.01c1885a59f6b03b2f213310c32a84df.jpg
  • Follow the instructions of your computer to download and install the new version.
  • I suggest Uninstalling the old version first, simply to avoid confusion as to which desktop shortcut goes to which version.

You should also give us information about your computer.  In ANY viewer, at the login screen, go to the Help menu, and choose About Second Life.  Copy all the information there by highlighting it and clicking CTRL+C.  Then paste it into a reply here with CTRL+V.

At least you can't drown in Second Life!

That computer is pretty marginal for Second Life.  I suggest you do the following to improve your performance a bit.

  • Go to Me>Preferences (shortcut is CTRL+P)
  • Click the Graphics tab
  • If only a single slider is shown, click the Advanced button to expand the window.
  • Disable the Advanced Lighting Model
  • Reduce draw distance from 128 to 64
  • Click the Network and Files tab
  • Change Bandwidth from 3000 to 1500.
  • Click OK at the bottom of the Preferences window

Next, open Search.  Use the button with a magnifying glass symbol, or hit CTRL+F.  In the Search box, type "Caledon Oxbridge University".  Click on the Teleport button in the relevant search result to go there.  COU has live helpers, and a walk through tutorial to help explain Second Life to you.
