It's very hard to tell you exactly what to do without knowing more about your computer and your Internet connection. That's generally where the problem lies.  To give us those details, open your viewer but do not log in.  Click Help >>> About Second Life in the upper left corner of your screen, and then click the Copy To Clipboard button to save that information.  Bring it back here and EDIT your original question by pasting the information that you just copied into it.  We'll have a much better chance of seeing what to do next.

Problems like this can often be traced to either having a computer that does not meet minimum requirements, an Internet connection that is unstable (avoid wifi, and try rebooting both your modem and your router), or overly-ambitious Preference settings in your viewer.  That last possibility can occur if you are using a graphics card that has limited ability or if you are using the graphics chip on your motherboard instead of using a dedicated graphics card.  We'll be able to get a start on narrowing those possibilities down or suggesting ways around other problems once we see what you post.

By the way, in case it's not obvious, this is a resident-to-resident Answers site.  We are all SL residents like you, although with many more years of experience with SL.  We've all wrestled with connection issues many times.

Your computer should be very capable of running SL with your current settings.

You might try white listing SL, and particularly the files in the cache, with your antivirus program.  AV scanning of all those texture files can slow down your computer and sometimes cause problems.
