You always buy L$ with USD.  Your credit card company or PayPal/Skrill account makes the currency exchange before they transfer money from your account with them to your account with Linden Lab.  If you want to anticipate how much the end cost to you will be in pounds Sterling, use Google to find a currency calculator online.

Once upon a time when LL allowed third party L$ exchanges you could buy L$ in £ with some exchanges offering better rates than others for buying in pounds, While it would be nice to be able to buy L$ in pounds from LL Rolig's suggestion of using a currency converter is going to be your only way of estimating how much USD you can spend on L$
