you can disable visibility on your friendslist, and in the preferences "only my friends can see me

 

BUT

if you are in groups people there will always be able to see your real status there.

Also.... when sending you a message, and they don't get the offline anouncement... they will know you'r there.

Second Life is designed to be a social medium, so true privacy isn't really possible.

There are ways that you can make it a little harder for people to know you're logged in, but these are easily overcome.  The only way to really show that you are offline is to BE offline.

If you need to be in Second Life anonymously, use an alt...an alternate account.

Or, you can build your own isolated private region hosted on your local computer, using the free OpenSim software.  Many third party viewers, like Firestorm, can be used with OpenSim regions and grids.  You can use such a setup to develop products in peace.
