As Rolig answered, yes.

BUT...

The quality of JPG files decreases as the the lossy JPG format gets converted to JPG2000, SL's internal storage format. PNG files usually look better after upload.

Size has an affect on quality of image. SL saves square images, mostly. Sizes convert to binary even sizes, 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, etc., up to 1024x1024. You can make rectanges too. 128x512, 128x1024, etc.

But odd non-power-of-two sizes require the SL servers to resize the image. The process is much lower quality than what you can achive with Photoshop. If you size your image outside of Sl you get better quality.
