you can go look for landowners who rent out parcels.

Some will do it with houses, others only land. Some will be at mainland, others have private estates.

In the last case you can go buy a house yourself, but be sure it will fit your land, and not uses all prims, because you won't be able to put any furnitur in it than.

MOST people have homes without a Premium account.  You only need a Premium account if you want to buy land on the Mainland continents.  With a basic free membership, you can still rent land on the Mainland from another resident, or you can "buy" (it's really a form of renting) land from a Private Estate owner.  About 75% of the land in Second Life is Private Estates.

As Alwin says, be sure that the land is physically large enough to accept the house you wish to buy or build there, and that it has enough "land capacity" (About Land, Objects tab) to accommodate the house and any landscaping, furniture, and other items you want.  Personally, I find a 4096 square meter size parcel to be ideal for a large home and its accessories.

If you get land on a Private Estate, read the Covenant before you buy.  Make sure that the Estate Owner will permit the style of building(s) and the activities you plan on.  For example, a contemporary style home would not go well in the Victorian regions of Caledon, and a downtown skyscraper would not mesh with homes on a tropical island!

I teach a class on Second Life land on Fridays, 5 p.m. SL Time, at Caledon Oxbridge University.  It's free to attend!
