It sounds like you are intending to open a shop in world, as opposed to a shop in Marketplace, which is on the web (outside of SL).  If that's the case, you can do anything you like for decoration,. layout, etc, as long as it fits in your budget and prim allowance, and is OK with whoever owns your region.  Or whoever you are renting from.  Before you decide to do any of that, I strongly recommend spending time to wander around in SL and see how in-world shops work.   The whole business of renting or buying land, creating assets, and setting up vendors can be overwhelming until you are familiar enough with how other people have done it.  If you intend to open a Marketplace shop, decoration is a moot point, since there are no shelves, carpets, etc.  You're not in a "space" that you have to rent or maintain.  You are on a web site.

First off, please please please take Rolig's advice.

Everything in world is user created.  The only things supplied by Linden Lab are the ground, the sea and the basic building tools.  You can change or make anything.  Your store could be a normal square building, a tree house, a space ship, a cluster of billboards in the middle of the woods, the trailer of an 18 wheeler or even floating objects in the clouds.  Gravity and the orientation of what us up and down are about the only things you can't change.

That said, if you are renting land or mall space from another user you may have other restrictions on what they allow you to change.
