You can buy mainland if you are Prmium or you can rent mainland or estate.  In many of those cases you can set up an access list of who can come there.  Usually in order to allow rezzing and such, you would need to add your friends to the land group and this may or may not be possible via renting, but is always possible when you own the land.

FYI - The premium account gives you 512m of TIER to apply towards any mainland.  You can use it to get a Linden Home, or you can apply it towards however much mainland you decide to buy.  Rentals -- estate or mainland -- are usually paid weekly and in L$.   Tier is paid directly to LL monthly via your Payment Info on File.

Thank you very much.  It sounds like I just need to figure out how to buy a small amount of land, and the premium acct will provide the monthly Tier? - which is like a fee for land?

Yeah, pretty much.  This page will tell you how the tier blocks break down and the associated fees.

https://secure-web38.secondlife.com/my/account/landfees.php?

The first 512m is included with your membership, so if you buy only a 512m plot of land, it will cost nothing more each month.  If you buy 1024, it will cost you an additional $5.00 per month.  The middle section can be used to calculate your cost by putting in different sizes of land that you are thinking of buying. Mainland is extremely cheap right now -- you can find plots for roughly L$1 per m -- so 512L$ for a 512.

Additional info for buying land -- each 512m will give you 117 prims for house, decorations, misc building & rezzing, etc...
