Hi Beverly,

Right click your avatar to Edit->Shape (or whatever it's called in the various viewers). The first pane of the shape editor is the "Body" pane, and at the very bottom of it you'll find a "Hover" slider. That should be near 50, and sometimes gets goofed up. Drag it back until you're comfortably above ground again.

Good luck!

This is a complex trick to fix. Madelaine McMasters' use of HOVER in apperance is the only easy fix. The problem with HOVER is the adjustment is rather course. I find it usually puts my feet in the floor or above the floor. It can only get you close unless you happen to be lucky.

The next thing to look at is the shoes you wear. There are various types of shoes. The default 'Classic' avatar is the avatar that has been part of SL for a decade. We often call it the system avatar. Newer avatars are different. They replace the classic avatar with what we call a mesh avatar. How you adjust the different types is different. So, you have to be aware of which avatar body you are are wearing to know which directions to follow and how to ask for specific help.

With either avatar there is a SHOE item you can find in inventory. You can adjust an existing one or make a new Shoe item. The icon is a red tennis shoe. There are Shoe height, Heel Height and other settings you can use to lift or lower your avatar. If you are wearing JUST the classic avatar body you will be able to see the settings distort the avatar foot. With most addon feet the classic avatar foot is hidden by an Alpha layer. If that is the case, you will NOT see your feet in the Appearance editor.

Shoes come as decales, which are part of the Shoe item, and/or as prim attachments that cover the classic avatar feet. Prim or Sculpty shoes can be edited  for position in the appearance editor. That gives you very fine grained control so the shoe touches the ground.

Shoes and feet also come in what we call rigged/fitted mesh. The position of these feet/shoes cannot be adjusted in the Appearance editor. So, you must use the SHOE item and HOVER to get those feet to properly touch the ground.

For many shoes the SHOE item will be no-mod. But, you can create a new SHOE item for those shoes/feet. Once made/adjusted it can be used as part of those shoes so you only have to do this once.
