There are several people in my friends list which seem to be online very rarely, or during times when I don't typically log into SL. I'd like an easier way of knowing when they're on, so maybe I can also log in during that period.

Is it possible to enable email or maybe even messenger notifications when a friend goes online? Last time I checked, there was a website that lets me see online friends without having to log in with the viewer... but I don't plan to permanently keep that open and refresh it. So maybe the website might let me set up a few other notifications too?

The website is secondlife.com...if you're curious.

Kinda. It's the 'My Account' page/dashboard. You've got to Log In in order to redirect to this page.

I also think that sessions from other SL subdomains (marketplace, my, community) don't automatically carry over.

URI is https://secondlife.com/my/

Oh, and messaging while out-of-world is out. They killed that 'cause it was (predictably) another vector for junk and spam.

I looked in my account settings there, but didn't find anything about email notifications for specific friends.

Yeah, that's not an option provided for as standard.

You can script your own solution to this, or check out Marketplace. LSL has plenty of capability in monitoring online status, though the servers providing this information are inaccurate lately.

Ah... I remember there's a LSL function to send emails actually, as well as one to check the online status of avatars if I'm correct. But for this I'd need to permanently rez an object in-world, and I don't really own any land, so not a solution for me.

there is another way, however its not an "email notifiction"

if you use Chrome, therre's an extension called "Chrome life". That lists which of your friends is online.

You do need to be logged into your "https://my.secondlife.com" link in order for it to work,

but after that, you can leave it open, and minimize it.
