You can have a heck of a lot of fun in SL for zero money. I lived here for my first six months with not a dollar to my name, making new friends, visiting endless sims and making things in public sandboxes that I later gave away to friends.

You buy them.  You get the best exchange rate if you buy Linden Dollars (L$) through the Lindex, but you may also buy through Authorized Resellers.  The exchange rate fluctuates but is generally very close to L$1000/$4 USD.  Take a look here....

When you have been in world long enough to have learned how to get around amd how to create objects that someone might like to buy, you may either sell them in the Marketplace or in an in-world shop.  Creating products that can compete in SL's economy takes talent and a familiarity with tools for building, scripting, texturing, animating, or other endeavors.  If being a creator doesn't appeal to you, you could set yourself up as a performing artist (musician, DJ, dancer, ...).  There, too, you will need to be familiar with the tools of your profession and comfortable with the performance culture in SL.  Other than those possibilities, there are some very limited opportunities to earn L$ as unskilled labor, and there are ways to earn small amounts of money by entering contests or games.  By far, though, the easiest way to get L$ is simply to buy it with RL dollars.
