It all depends on how you have set your preferences.  Look at Preferences >>> Privacy.  If you have checked Only friends and groups know I'm online, then as far as the general public is concerned, you are always offline.

I've tried that but it still shows I'm online even after I've unchecked those areaIs there anything I'm missing to show I'm offline to everybody?

The above setting will not stop friends and groups from seeing you as online - there is no way to do that.  It is simply making it so that non-friends do not see your status as online.

Exactly.  The only way to make your online status unknown to friends is to deliberately change the preferences for each friend individually in your own profile.  This is a social world.  The price of having friends is that there may be people who want to know that you are in world. 

Of course, it really doesn't make any difference how you have your preferences set, or whether you even have any friends.  Anyone can see whether you are in world.  It's public information, very easy to get with a simple script.  It's also default information shown in the Firestorm viewer (used by something like 70% of SL residents).
