To abandon your Linden Home:

  • Stand in the home.
  • Pick up all your stuff, one thing at a time (not in one big lump).
  • Open World >>> About Land
  • Click Abandon Land.

As a Premium member, you may buy or rent land anywhere in SL.  You pay the one-time purchase price and then pay land fees monthly.  The amount of the land fees depends on how much land you have, and of course you can use the Premium land fee waiver to offset the first 512 sq m of fees if you have bought on the Mainland.  Look in the Land forum to seee what's available, or just start exploring.

When you buy/rent land, any prims you place on it count against your total land impact.  My personal rule of thumb is to use no more than 30% of the total land impact on a house.  That will leave you the remaining 70% for furnishings, landscaping, and whatever.  You may either buy a house from an experinced builder or you can build something yourself.  You decide which is more fun, more affordable, and within your range of talent.

You might also consider taking Lindal Kdd's free in-world class in land ownership and management TONIGHT at Caledon Oxbridge University.

How to Buy and Rent Land in SL
Time: Friday, 17:00 SLT
Instructor: Lindal Kidd

You do not have to have land in Second Life to have fun but it sure helps! Introduction to Land will teach you the basics of how to find, buy or rent, and sell land in Second Life. There is also an introduction to land controls, and a discussion of the risks and rewards of land on Private Estates versus the Linden Lab owned Mainland.

Caledon Oxbridge offers classes every week. All classes are free and open to everyone. Unless otherwise noted, classes are taught at the Caledon Oxbridge Lecture Hall located between the "Cathedral/Gateway" and the "College of Avatar Motion".

This is a follow-on question from http://community.secondlife.com/t5/Land/increase-prims/qaq-p/2272255

Dee - don't!  You have come into SL and straightaway bought premium membership.  We all love new residents but we want you to share the love ... don't rush to spend more money ;-)

You are already spending real money and are now thinking of spending more.  Stop first, follow Rolig's advice for finding-out about renting or buying land and, most importantly, get out and about a bit!  Are you sure you'll want to be here in a month or two months, or a year?  If you are, then great - go for a financial commitment.  If you aren't then don't make that commitment when you don't need to.

There are many, many free things available throughout SL that cover the whole range of things most people want.  Learn about SL before you pay too much for it.

[And] Have fun
