I am using a stock Dell Precision m4700 mobile workstation.

Whenever I try to run the Second Life application I get the following in the console:

You are running the Second Life Viewer on a x86_64 platform. The
most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly
'bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found' and 'error while
loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
distribution's 32-bit compatibility packages.
For example, on Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linuxes you might run:
$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs ia32-libs-gtk ia32-libs-kde ia32-libs-sdl

This is a BETA release of the Second Life linux client.
Thank you for testing!
Please see README-linux.txt before reporting problems.

Others have said that this program runs fine for them, so I'm not sure if I am just missing a certain package or if it is some kind of incompatibility problem. I am running 64 bit Opensuse 12.3 and it is totally up to date. Also, I am using an NVIDIA Quadro K2000 graphics card with the most current drivers.

Any help would be great as I really want to be able to run this program.

Thanks

AFAIK OpenSuse uses KDE. The crash is due to a number of issues relating to how the viewer uses GTK libraries and how KDE supports it.

One blunt fix is to rename the ~/.gtkrc-2.0* file(s), the viewer should start then. Problem is, it'll make all Gnome programs look fugly.

Another possible solution is to just block the SL client from accessing that file. That can be done with Apparmor, though I am unsure how to do it in Suse. In general, drop this into the /etc/apparmor.d directory (name it "secondlife-bin"):

# Last Modified: Wed Feb 13 02:34:38 2013#include <tunables/global>/**/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin {  #include <abstractions/base>  #include <abstractions/user-tmp>  network,  # Dumb but doable - allow everything  /** mixrwkl,  # And the crashy culprit... denying this effectively stops the PCRE crash under KDE  deny /home/*/.gtkrc-2.0 mrwkl,}

Restart to activate the rule, or try "rcapparmor restart"

If you're using a different viewer you may need to adjust the name of the executable from "do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin" to whatever the TPV uses.

Call me stupid, but isn't all you need exactly what is posted in your crashlog?

I have the LL viewer running on a 64 bit linux, I did need to install the 32 bit libraries.

My opensuse doesn't have this file you described. However, I did manage to find a way to get second life to run. First I went to the Opensuse build serve and found a repo with firestorm and just installed an rpm version of the program and now it works. I'm not sure why the normal tarball version won't run though. I am a newb to linux though and I am sure there is something obvious I am overlooking here.
