The default walks look bad - almost everyone uses something called an AO or "animation overrider" which customizes their animations. There are many choices of AO's that you can get; some are available for free.

To dance at a club, there's usually a ball floating in the air or some other object that will make your avatar dance - you click on it, give it permission to animate you and then (often) choose a specific dance.

You can also buy dances in the form of animations that  you can play out from your inventory or you can get a personal dance system called a "chimera" that will let you choose from a variety of dances you own and play them anywhere.

To walk SMOOTHLY you need an AO (animation overrider). There are some free ones at the Marketplace or close to free. Here is the link.

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/products/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&search[layout]=gallery&search[category_id]=&search[sort]=&search[per_page]=12&search[keywords]=ao&search[price_low]=0&search[price_high]=10&search[prim_count_low]=&search[prim_count_high]=&search[copy_permission]=0&search[modify_permission]=0&search[transfer_permission]=0

Boy that's a long one. If that doesn't work, go to the Marketplace  https://marketplace.secondlife.com/  and type "AO" in search. Then choose the $0 - $10 choice for searching.

You can buy dance animations but oftentimes clubs have a dance ball or some other item that you can click and choose from the dances they have there. Assuming you are new, best to start off with those and then explore the options as you get used to the world.

Have fun.

You probably ARE walking "correctly"...but the basic built in walk animation is pretty poor.  Most people refer to it as a "duck walk".  To improve on it, you need a gadget called an "animation overrider", or AO.  This replaces the default walk, run, sit, and stand animations with other, better looking ones.  You can often find a basic, free AO in the newbie and freebie stores.

For more on AOs, see my blog post, "AO, AO...It Makes Your Movements Flow"

For dancing, see my blog post, "Shall We Dance?"
