Your avatar can never be locked in your house, because it's always possible to TP out and back in.  Doors are handy, though, and they add a touch of realism.  Unfortunately, however, there are many ways to make a door, so it's impossible to say exactly how you should install yours.  This simplest answer -- assuming that you can an opening for a door -- is just rez the door and drag it into the opening.  The challenge is that some doors are designed to be free-standing --- unlinked to a building -- and others have to be linked.  Door scripts may be written many different ways.  The smartest thing to do is to look for instructions that came with the door, or ask the merchant who sold it to you.

Besides Rolig's great answer, there are many ways to escape from the inside of a house.

1.  Rez a cube, sit on it, and edit the cube, with yourself on it, to the outside of the house

2.  Edit the wall of the house and click Phantom in the Object tab.  Then just walk thru it.

3.  Move your camera to the outside and double click the ground to teleport to that spot.  (This has to be enabled in your Preferences first.)

4.  Once you are out, create a landmark outside the house.  Then you can always teleport to it,.

5.  If you use Firestorm, use the Go To Position (gtp x y z) or Go To Height (gth z) chat commands to move your avatar to a new location outside the house.

6.  Call a friend and get them to send you a teleport

7.  Log out and re log to a different location.

8.  If you have the appropriate edit rights, edit a wall of your house to create a temporary opening.
