I assume that you are not a Premium member.  If you were, you would know all about registering for a Linden Home, which is a good way to get started in home ownership in SL.  As a Basic member, your best option is to search for rental property on either the mainland or a private sim.  Many landlords rent parcels with houses on them already.  Others will rent a bare parcel on which you can either build your own home or rez a prefab that you have bought from a builder.  I suggest possibly taking a free in-world course in land management at Caledon Oxbridge University to learn a lot of the basics.

You won't do it for free.  While many things in SL are free, land (and housing) aren't.

There are many ways to own or rent land.  As Rolig mentioned, I teach a class in Second Life land topics.  It's free to attend, and held every Friday at 5 pm SL time at Caledon Oxbridge University.
