Anywhere you want.....almost

If you put a skyplatform at 400m or lower it will appear on the World map so many people avoid anything lower than 400m.  And you cannot rezz objects above 4096m, so you need to be below that as well

Other than that, the sky's the limit! :)

One way to create a sky platform is to create it on the ground.  Once you have it created, Go into Edit and change the Z location of the platform to the height you want.  It will instantly jump to that new location.

In additio to the great Cinnamon answer: "One way to create a sky platform is to create it on the ground.  Once you have it created, Go into Edit and change the Z location of the platform to the height you want.  It will instantly jump to that new location." And if you sit on the plattform, you will jump with the plattform to the new height :)

Apart from sticking in the range 400m - 4,000m as has been mentioned you may well want to avoid the 'normal' heights for skyboxes.

With 4km to play with you'll find it enormously annoying to have neighbours all around you at 500m, 1,000m. etc.  Of course, if neither you nor they want privacy - if it's just a work-space, for instance - that's not an issue.  If you are looking for a bit of peace though it can be suprisingly crowded up there.

Good luck
