I'm told I've encountered an error when I attempt to update the Official SL viewer.

Question

"Error opening file for writing:

C:/Program Files (x86)\SecondLifeViewer\win_crash_logger.exe

Click Abort to stop the installation,

Retry to try again, or

Ignore to skip this file"

If I click "retry",  the same message pops up so all I can do is  ignore/abort.

After all that, I can open the viewer and the opening screen shows with a message shaving there was an error with installation but when I go in-world, nothing seems wrong. This has been going on for a couple of months and I've tried reinstalling the viewer a few times but nothing. How do I fix this problem?

Thank you!

That message is telling you that the viewer is gathering information that may be useful for diagnostic purposes if you crash.  It's triggered when the viewer has reason to believe that crashing is likely.  The fact that you don't crash means that the threat wasn't as bad as it might have been.  You dodged a bullet. At the same time, though, it's telling you that something is wrong.  Usually, that "something" is a file that was damaged during installation.  Unless you have done a careful, manual "clean install" each time, there's a reasonable chance that the damaged file is simply being passed from one installation to the next. So, reinstall the right way >>> http://community.secondlife.com/t5/English-Knowledge-Base/How-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-Second-Life/ta-p/1375231

When you ask a tech question include information about your computer and viewer. If the viewer will at least show the login screen, get the info from the viewer's Help-About... and paste that into your post with your question. Help->About... provides all the version numbers we need.  To add your info to an existing question use OPTIONS->EDIT. It’s in the upper right of your post.

It also helps to know if you are using a laptop or a desktop and a wired or wireless connection between the computer and gateway and/or between the gateway and ISP. T-Mobile and other ISP’s use a wireless system to connect to you.

Without information all we can do is guess. That means you have to try all our bad guesses and eliminate them one by one. This is easier for all of us, if you give us good information to start with.

===========

Some installs have a problem overwriting files in the Program folder. Try running the install program as the Administrator. Another alternative is to uninstall the viewer and then reinstall it.
